Decided last week its time to sort out my nc30 after it being stood for about 2 years. So im after some advice really on what to do with it. At the end I want a mint bike with a decent value. So do I try and keep it standard or not, what parts should I keep or upgrade. Basicaly I dont no much about these bikes so any advice would be good

No matter what the condition its only ever going to fetch so much money.jay20jay wrote:Hi all

Have a look at what the average price of the bikes are fetching now.
For example,
A clean original spec NC30 will usually fetch the most money, with a premium paid for a UK model.
I could be off here as im not sure on UK prices but i'd imagine aroudn 3000 for a very low milage clean unmolested NC30.
A bag of junk is going to fetch between 6-800 quid.
You can often spend more restoring a bad one than to buy one that has just been looked after.
If your primary concern is getting your money back then its probably best just to wash the bike, polish it and try to sell it for a bit more than you bought it for.. old bikes usually always cost some.
Anyway.
If you dont mind spending a bit on it that you probably wont get back when you come to sell it. Here is what I would do based on your bike and having messed with loads of them.
Before anything give it a good service if it hasn't had one, plugs air filter, oil, oil filter, coolant, check the carbs if its running at all unlike a swiss watch (they are super smooth when set up properly). Chain and sprockets and tyres inspect too.
Check all the bearings, streering head, swing arm and wheels for play and replace where necesasry.
Get the valve clearances done and balance the carbs. After that you are ready to start messing with the bike.
Once your sure you have a reliable engine that isnt knackered and all your bearings, chain and sprockets are ok you can proceed.
** The 89 bike has a poor rear shock and poor front forks compared to a later bike.
1st thing would be to upgrade to the later spec forks and overhaul them (new bushes / fluid / rick-o does a nice spring kit for them) they look the same but instead of having just a silver screw on the top for pre-load they also have a smaller brass screw for compression damping.
2nd would be to upgrade the rear shock.. there are enough out there for every budget, buy the best you can afford, it will save you money in the long run.
3rd get the suspension setup by a professional or somebody that knows what they are doing to help you, bike will run and handle like a dream at this point.
4th if the bodywork wont clean up you can always either
1. get new chinese copy panels (not great but look nice for a while)
2. get decent 2nd hand original panels (will take a while to collect a decent set for cheap)
3. get a 3rd party bodykit, like tyga or something (personal choice, i think they are shit. quality of work is great though)
4. get your stuff repainted.
True story about a dyno meet went to one time.. many old bikes, some looked great, blagged a ride on one bike that looked like it had just rode out the showroom, jesus christ was it naff, no power, flat spots, crap all brakes.
At the same dyno meet was another bike the same apart from it looked like it had just come out a barn, all original plastics but well worn, made nearly 10hp more than all the other bikes and rode like it was on rails, could flip the bike if you pressed the brakes hard too.
two extreemes there but if you spend all your money makng it "look the part" as many do, especially young people who are excited to get their first big bike it often leaves no money for servicing, tuning, making it run right.
if you read above, id start with the general service and find out if anything needs replacing.
A set of front forks should be easy enogh to come by as well as the price for rebuilding them and fitting the new springs.
Then all you really need is a decent rear shock and to decide what to do with your bodywork.. you can allocate your budget between apearance and rear shock.. id bias my budget to rear shock.
Just remember.. even if it looks rough you can still ride it and take it to bike meets and ride outs without fear of breaking down, and surprise folks when you can outride them due to your good setup.
If your riding a polished turd dont be surprised it it breaks down when yoru out and about.

Re: resto help info
Thanks for reply. I have been looking at other members post and have gave me a few ideas my main thing first is do decide on keeping it standard or not. I would like to make it in my own taste but I can see me spending so much money and never being able to get that back. Thats why I was asking about some of the standard parts are there any rare or expensive parts I have or will need.
I plan on putting the bike in storage when its done and building a small collection so I will be keeping it a few years my main worry is when I come to sell will I lose more money by moding it or will it still have the same sort of value. Either way I will lose money as I want it mint but I dont mind loosing some as I enjoy doing the work

Right the bike ran mint very smoth and responsive. I paid 800 for it 2 years ago of a friend of my dads whos had it for years. It had a basic sort of resto by him but the engine was sent of and had a complete strip and rebuild. So no probs with engine but everything else looks tatty or needs work. Bike has been stripped and is now ready for powder coating every bearing will be replaced etc.
Hopefully this makes sence have 2 kids screaming at me

Re: resto help info
If you have full and original panels, uncut original system and indicators, undertray and all that..then keep it std.
Money on mods you will not get back unless full systems etc - they get passed about like nobodies business!
Get some pics up..let's see where you are at.
my hunch..an £800 bike is not the best place for a value rebuild/future desirable.
