knocking engine - stopped solid - new engine in - update!
hi
97 superfour
running fine two weeks ago (sunday) did 200 miles round trip and was fine oil fine water fine not used either
came to it on monday and it starts tapping..........
no smoke from exhaust and as its revved it kept pace with engine (didnt want to rev it above 3k just in case
http://s999.photobucket.com/albums/af12 ... V_0882.mp4
stopped after the vid and thought about it for couple of days then decided to take to mech to ask about it
got halfway.......- it was only two miles) and setting off from set of lights did 50ft and stopped like id hit the kill switch pushed it over kelloggs hill in trafford park (puff pant) if you know it
was running like a swiss watch the day before
what have i done - not happy as its the old mans (he was calm) and i love the bike and its in lovely nick dont want to break it if its knackered - seen a cb1 engine from a 90 are they straight swap?
thanks for any pointers *goes and hides inthe corner*

You haven't added a video, just a picture.

I think it works with 3 cylinders. Many reasons may cause that.Ruined one of your spark,or spark plug or cable,or one of the curb membrane have teared,so you must check at these points first. Most i think you have tear membrane.
I hope that it is not more serious problem like with crankshaft or piston.

Re: knocking engine - stopped solid - ENGINE NOW OUT! UPDATE
can you feel a mechanical tapping/knocking or is it just noise?
confirm all the vacuum tapping points (used for syncing carbs) are still in place.
also it would have helped if you sprayed a mist of water on the exhaust pipes just as u start it up to see which cylinder is working differently than the other 3.
If you pull out the plugs and compare the tips they might also give you a pointer as to which is the problematic cylinder. At least you'll have a starting point.

Two air hoses ? there are two hoses that connect underneath the petrol tank the larger of the two connects to the filler cap drain and the smaller of the two connects to the tank vent make sure this is clear by blowing through it.
There is a small rubber pipe that connects to number one cylinder to operate the vacumm petrol tap.
There are also two short pipes that fit between 1 and 2 carb and 3 and 4 carb on top of the carbs these clip into a recess just above the airbox.
There is also a larger bore pipe that fits between 2 and 3 carb and fits into the top of the aircleaner.
Also a pipe that connects between the rear of the cam cover and the aircleaner.
