charge system??? dead battery???

Post by webby16 »

fitted a new battery today. a good quality bosch one and it fired up lovely ticked over smoothly and the idle was nice and low. found another problem though the system seemed to be a total loss system and the battery was flat when i got home after about an hours worther or riding, i did have to putmy lights on but thats when i noticed the bike start to stutter as if it had no battery? not sure whether this is the regulator or thwe generator? any suggestions???
thanks david

If the bike started stuttering as soon as you put the lights on then there must be a serious short in the lighting circuit somewhere. You *should* be able to run for about 30 minutes on sidelights or about 10 minutes on headlights if the battery isn't charging.
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

generator is fucked I reckon.. Have a look at it, and get the multimeter out adn test it - I;d guess a phase has died and so you don't get proper charging

if the genny cannot provide enough power to run the bike then the battery starts to go flat. You turn the lights on..it starts to go flat and then dies..

Chekc the genny..

And..why swap the reg rec? Was it dead? Did the genny get checked then?

I think it is the generator it's not a short circuit I don't think since everything is operational. Just a quick question about rick Oliver's Gsxr alternator conversion. Does the kit come with the alternator aswell as the flywheel/housing.
Thanks david

£200 is a lot of money mind so it's just an option.

Thinking of getting my alternator re wired/conditioned

Why not start at the alternator and work through the charging system. With rect/reg disconnected, check stator resistance yellow to yellow wires 1-2 ohms, yellow wires to chassis infinite resistance. With rect/reg disconnected measure AC voltage between yellow wires, should be 50 volts at 5000 rpm.

If alternator tests ok then suspect rect/reg.
