Newbie FZR owner
Hi everyone, been reading stuff on this forum since November when I bought my 3TJ1. So I thought it was time I introduced myself and said hi.
My name is Chris but everyone calls me Keny, I live in Wrexham north Wales and didn't actually own a bike until 2011 when I got my shit together and bought a Mito mk1 evo. Passed my test in October and got my hands on my little FZR. She is in good nick for her age and always puts a smile on my face
Been in the garage this weekend to give her a good clean, took all the fairings off because the frame has been polished by someone and access was needed to get in their with some autosol. If anyone has any tips for stopping tarnishing I would be very grateful. I'm in a bit of a dilemma as to derestriction I would have gone down the road of fitting a kph- mph converter but the clocks have been changed to mph ones, this must have been done when the bike was imported in 1995 as all the old mot's show mileage in mph so I'm presuming my only other option is an M max box which seem to be rather hard to source! My temp gauge also doesn't work but apart from that she's sweet cant wait for summer :)

Glad to hear you've got a Tee Jay, hello and welcome.
Are you sure its a 3TJ ? Mph clocks could be a 4DX the official import bike. Have a look on the CDI unit under the riders seat, the rear light is different too.
The temp gauge could be the temp gauge itself , a wire off or broken at the back of the clocks or the sender unit. You need a 12volt circuit tester ... they look like a screw driver with a wire and crocodile clip coming out the top. You put the croc clip on a nut or bolt (a frame earth), the other end goes on a wire, a bulb lights if there's power there. So take the fairing, off and the top fairing (catch the headlight) and you can see the clocks, check the wiring, warm the bike up and see if and power is getting to the clock. If it isn't put a wire from a known live onto the clock if it moves great, if not do the same for the earth. If the clocks OK then download the wiring diagram from the literature page of this site. Find the temp sender ... and replace it.
Polished frame huh ... get a polishing kit from The Polishing Shop and use it with a drill.

Thanks for the reply evil, I'm pretty sure it's a 3TJ as the V5 states it was imported in 1995 and it is restricted to 112 mph and 12500rpm! I'll sort the temp gauge out soon when I change the oil etc. the rear light has the two lenses not one big lense? Cheers Keny

3tj1s should be restricted to 112mph as standard, but should rev out to about 14.5K rpm
i think you'll find it's only revving to about 12.5K rpm because someone's put mph clocks on it,
the kph clocks send a signal to the cdi on ignition (along with a few other bits and bobs) if the cdi doesn't receive the signal it restricts the revs to about 12,5K rpm through the gears
i don't think the 4dx mph clocks work the same as the kph clocks, because it's not restricted
(The kph clocks have a restrictor plate in the back that is triggered by the needle at 180kph simplified version )

That's interesting so if I could get hold of a 4DX CDI would that give me no speed restriction and 14.500 rpm?
Also could I get some kph clocks and a speedo converter and get the same result? One more question what would I achieve with an M max box and what function would it play? I'm guessing a 4DX setup wouldn't need the M max.

but 4dx CDIs don't come up very often, you'll have to post in the wanted section on here, or try fleebay and see what comes up, eather way
don't know a great deal about the M-max box never had one, but it does de-restrict the bike and also raises the rev to about 15.5K rpm
you could also try bendy on here, he converts the cdi to a race unit (wouldn't be any good for a road bike) but he may be able to just de-restrict the 3tj CDI, i don't know, may be worth a PM though

3TJ clocks have a sender unit at the back of the KMH speedo, this will need to be plugged into the loom. If you had a set of these you can fit a KMH > MPH mechanical converter which will push the restriction up to 180mph. You'll need the gold one that goes down at the wheel end of the speedo cable, Blue ones go up by the clocks but foul the fairing inners.
An M-Max can plug into the loom behind the speedo (or into the CDI depening on the type). It gives it's own signal to the CDI and prvents it from restricting.
You could also have your CDI doctored to remove the restriction, this however takes out a circuit that also controls the side stand cut out the fuel "res" and possibly the red limiter. The reserve on these isn't a tap, the CDI gets a signal and it closes down 2 cylinders, if you flick the switch it turns off the signal and the engine fires normally.
