What mods to do to the NC30???

Post by laminator »

I've had my NC30 for a while now and not done anything to it, apart from new exhaust collars, oil, plugs, etc.

What would you guys, and girls, recommend as nice 'tweeks'? I am up to speed with my Bimota's and FZR, but the NC30 stuff is a mine field to me. There's loads of different parts for them.

The current exhaust isn't stock but is in good condition. I'd like twin stacks, but can these be bought new, any second hand ones about (or are they all spoken for)? what exhaust would you guys recommend?

Also should I spend some money on rearsets, fairings, clock surrounds, forks, shocks, rectifier, etc or would I be better spending it on something else.

I'd also like to convert it to a single seat, is there a recommended place I can obtain such a thing? Obviously I'd have to get it sprayed, etc. But that may then lead to a complete fairing set and spray job!

The bikes performance is fine for me, I'm not too interested in HP gains.

Any info happily received and noted :)

Cheers

How do pal, obvious place to start is the suspension. Rick O fork kit is a one stop kit to sorting out the front end although your a little on the small side if i remember rightly so some softer springs than he normally supplies would be better. He also sells some nice machined fork tops to replace the seized up originals should you need them. Rear end simple, any of the brand named shocks are good options or rebuilt remote res stock shocks units aint bad. Theres some retro fit shock options out there, im sure youve seen the threads.

As for the motor a good service inc valves, clean and set the carbs and your good to go unless your after big BHP. As for systems if your prepared to wait and look for them pretty much all the old jap systems can still be had. Half, full systems, single can, twin stack and SP1 style, other than that you've always got TYGA. Lightweight alternators are a good mod, Rick O does a cover to accept a GSXR rotor and stator.

Electrics need to be in good order, regs are crap im sure you know so an upgrade such as yam R6 will do. All the subframes are available in alloy, SES and tyga again although i like the Rick O ones. Rearsets, BEET, TSR, WR are all nice and are still available, again SES and TYGA do there own brand.

1 piece seat units are available, Rick O, TYGA, Silhouette in whatever style you fancy, RC45, RC30 or just NC30.

Or just leave it as ibby says  your be a richer man

Cheers for the replies, I don't know but I might be suffering withdrawal symptoms from not getting out on a bike :)

Looking at the picture of my bike reminds me how much I already like the colour scheme, etc.

I keep looking at RVF's, but have to tell myself that I don't have any room for another bike. Then I thought about spending some time and love on the VFR. There is nothing wrong with the bike, I just thought I might give it some new bits.

I'm tempted to buy a chinese fairing set and spray the VFR in a very similar scheme to this RVF:-

Or..... do I buy an RVF and do it properly with all the carbon, etc

Lam'

I'd leave it with stock body work, that's a cracking colour scheme. Good bikes with stock panels are getting more rare, I looked at the bike you have [Carnforth wasn't it?] on the web and considered buying it.
I'd go over the mechanicals, make sure it's all tip top. I did the RO fork kit, feels ok, I guess we get spoilt by YBs tho! I got an Ohlins on the back and that's the best £300 spent.
Oh am i fitted the K&N filter in the stock air filter housing, easy £28 job. It's off a Chrysler I think. Have the P/No somewhere, or do a search.
Oh, and stock Honda HH pads transformed my brakes

Jack the rear up if you haven't already.

I put a RVF link on mine and I've only ridden it a few times since but it instantly feels better, seems to hold the road better and just gave me more confidence when tipping it in

Other than that if you want to spend some money on it then I'd look at upgrading the workings of the bike:

Brakes (full re-build or cbr calipers, braided lines)
Suspension (RO fork kit, aftermarket shock)
Charging system (bigger/better reg/rec, re-do and re-route the wiring, gxsr alternator)
Cooling system (new rads if needed, fancy hoses, HRC header, oil cooler conversion)
Intake and Exhaust (can/half system/full system, re-jet and get set up properly)
Headlight upgrade (H4 conversion, angel eyes)

Then some proper trick stuff like mentioned before, aluminium subframes, rearsets, digi dash, single seat, fancy lightweight wheels.

The list is quite long, but it's your bike and your money :peace:

I am happy with the way standard NC30s go, that is why I bought one, but if I had just one bike [or may be just 2 NC30s] then perhaps I would modify one to my ultimate.
However, with as many bikes as you have, then I would just accept each for what it is, and ride the one I fancied at that moment in time, that's what I do.
Your NC looks to be a decent original bike, just as I like.

I would like an increase in the NC30s rear ride height to get it to turn quicker though.

The suspension, imo, is fine on the VFR. It's never gave me cause to worry and has loved every corner I've thrown it at. Maybe I could look for another bike that needs work doing to it, then I can replace broken parts, rather than replacing bits on my bike just for the sake of it.

I'm a small bloke, as Drunkn mentioned, so jacking the back up might not suit me.

Phil, what benefit does the filter make :- power, noise (I like induction noise, that's why the little YB7 sounds sooooo good)? I guess it'd need a rolling road setup after fitting it?

Bikemonkey - Rads could be a good idea as I plan on a few trackdays this summer, also it might be worth doing the rec before it causes any problems.

Arsey30 - I know what you mean about take the right bike out. I've got two Bimotas sat here that I've not even ridden yet (YB6 - FZR1000, YB8 - FZR1000 EXUP). I tend to take the YB9, FZR, or VFR out more than any others. Mainly because the YB7's low miles, YB4's in Portugal, etc. The YB9 is such a nice bike to ride but on longer journeys it can make the wrists hurt, the FZR just makes a fantastic noise and makes me laugh in my helmet, and the VFR is closest to the garage door (also it's very easy to ride about town (FZR has a very long 1st gear and C/R box))

I'll have a look over RO site to see if anything grabs my eye :)

Quite, I now just ride what I fancy at the time, Bantam or RD around the quiet country lanes, NCs to go anywhere, but early Sunday morning on the empty roads are where the RC30s are at their best, and the open carbs [no air filter] make such a glorious sound.
