Notchy rocker arm.
Bit of an unusual one here, i have noticed that one of my rocker arms has a big notch in it at the end of it travel, it seems too far back to show up when the camshafts are in place so i am not sure if i should be worried about it or not?
I have uploaded a video to show it as best as possible so if anyone could take a look and tell me your thoughts on it that would be brilliant.

Thanks,
Kieran.

Re: Notchy rocker arm.
you can always take them out and clean/moly grease the pivots for them, but as long as it is able to move relatively freely in the "working" position then no worries.
However, the easier they move, the less they take out of the motor to move them instead of spinning that gearbox

Re: Notchy rocker arm.
Thanks for the quick reply mate, It is smooth as you like in the working position its just that one notch further up that worried me as i may get time to reassemble the motor tomorow and i didnt want to overlook anything.
Had a read of the WSM and it says you can remove the rocker arm shaft without removing the end plug that needs to be replaced so i will take it out tomorrow and relubricate it with some moly grease and see if it improves.

Re: Notchy rocker arm.
I've never had the cams out, and you don't have the valves installed so it's hard to tell in my inexperience, but in operation are the rockers actually going to be as far up as where it appears the notchy one is a bit 'sticky'?

Re: Notchy rocker arm.
You will not remove the shafts without removing the plugs,
You can remove the rockers without revoving the shaft.
Put a bolt in the hole near the end of the shaft as this bolt locks the shaft to prevent it turning in the head.
Then check again.

@ speedy yes thats right its miles too far up to effect it when the cams are in place, but im not really sure whats causing it so i am worried it may get worse when the engine is running.
@hunter i have just put a bolt in like you suggested and the problem is still present, i think i will remove the rockers to grease them and see if that cures the problem.

Re: Notchy rocker arm.
Ok i just rechecked the workshop manual and it says you can remove the shaft without removing the end plug so i did that, cleaned and regreased everything, put it back together and i am still having the problem, on closer inspection i have found out it is the dividing spring that is causing the problem.
I used a stanley blade to push the spring over and then pushed the rocker arm up and down and it moves as freely as the rest now, which i must admit is a big relief after thinking it was a worn rocker or shaft!
I assume that it will be fine to reassemble the motor seeing as the notch is not in the working travel range when the camshafts are in place and that nothing appears to be damaged, or does anyone disagree with this?

Re: Notchy rocker arm.
Is the spring worn or damaged? I think someone here was offering another poster some spares when they found someone had replaced them with solid tubes in their engine.

Re: Notchy rocker arm.
No the spring is fine which is strange as there is obviously something not quite right with it but its definatly doing its job properly, just remembered ive got 2 spare RVF heads so i will swap springs and see if that cures it.
EDIT: found out my good RVF head and most of the rocker arms are the same on that! The RVF motor was running fine up until a split pin was dropped down the bore, i found a pair of rockers that where moving freely, swapped over all of the moving parts one at a time to determine the fault and its still there! This is a real headscratcher, if anyone else has a good head lieing around could you check to see if any of the rocker arms do this?
