NC29 - Colour scheme

Post by Max »

Can't decide what to do with the bikes colour scheme in the long run. The current plastics are pretty ruined and held in with zip ties etc and have no original graphics on them.

The bikes original colour scheme is a bit plain so whilst I would normally always go original I'm really not sure.

This is what it should look like (type 6)

One option is that I stick with the same model colour scheme as its an RRN and just move to the type 5

The other idea is either pure class or complete rubbish and I keep changing my mind is this

I'd really appreciate any thoughts on this to help me make up my mind.

Type 5 all the way - but then I am a little bit biased!

Really depends how much work you want to put in. Black type 6 is the easiest thats for sure, decals will be cheaper as well.

It's a good point about the amount of work that I want to put in. A set of black fairings and a few decals is relatively easy and the design isn't that difficult. Compared to the other colour schemes I just think it looks a bit plain and almost non-original to the casual observer.

The reality is that I'm going to have to buy a new set of fairings at some stage, and they're more than likely going to be coming from China via everyones favourite auction site. Given they claim to be able to do any paint scheme - what would you choose? I appreciate it's not going to be an OEM match in terms of colour or design but i'll live with that.

The type 6 colours have a really nice candy red flake mixed in with the black, I think the copies would likely be just plain black due to cost?

I'd probably look into getting a Type 5 or 7 kit - dependent on which tank you can source. Both schemes are popular so tank availability should be OK.

THE scheme to have
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

Im unsure of tank availibility for type 7, ive been looking and asking for three years and in that time I have only found one and it was slughtly damaged. If you know of any please let me know.

One reason i like the white colours over black is because the white shows the shape of the fairings better, especially that gorgous shaped tail fin on the bottom of the rear fairing, the cut is very sharp and looks great. The black tends to blend the shape and make the rear more rounded i think. Take a peek at the pictures of the 5&6 above to see what i mean.

How important do you think it is to be close to the original? For example, does a blatantly older or newer design than what should be on the bike matter? I really really like some of the earlier designs but do you think it's sacrilege to go so far from what would have originally been on there?

Everyone's been suspiciously quiet about the urban tiger.....

To be honest Max go with what you want.

I can tell you that im a stickler for the type 7 (2nd version urban tiger as some call the type 5 urban tiger too). The black/orange type 7 design above is not oem despite the 900 having this scheme. I have seen as many L&N models painted in R colours so i suppose people generally dont care as long as the design suits them.

Maybe weigh up the costs and time to prepare and paint with how much you use your bike, if its just going to be a summer bike maybe take a look at the Chinese sets although they mainly dont get high marks, they are a quick way to re cloth your bike.

Yes mate you're right.

I wanted to see what reaction a different scheme to the original would get. This gives me a bit of confidence to go with the one I like. I think because own plastics are quite difficult to come by now means that people are more open to different or non original schemes.

I'll do the research about whether to collect random originals and respray then decal (image works £120 full set sounds like good value) or just go eBay copies and suck up the fitting and colour match issues.

If anyone has anymore thoughts please do let me know. Whilst its my bike it's always good to hear other opinions.
