Alternate NC30 rear wheel size options - Advice wanted.

I am keeping my eyes open for either a pair of alternate trick wheels (Dymag / PVM etc) for the NC30, or at least a 17" rear option.

Having searched and read many threads I have come to the following conclusions....

The OEM NC30 runs a standard 18" x 4.5" rear wheel that takes a 150/60-18 tyre. The RVF wheel (if you can find one) will drop straight on, linkage hight issues aside and run a 150/60 - 17 tyre.

An alternate 17" rear wheel option is the VFR750 wheel swap which requires a modifed hub to take the wheel. The VFR wheel comes in both 5" and 5.5" widths with the 5" one being the prefered option to then fit a 160/60-17 tyre to.

Please correct any of the above if I am wrong

SO with those aside there are also things like picking up a set of RC30 wheels (or possibly even other Honda varients). With things like the RC30 wheels the minimum wheel thickness seems to be 5.5". I am not sure what tyre profile they would run, but at what point do you start to get into clearance issues?

I would like to try and avoid requiring spacers and 520 chains etc - I just don't seem to be able to find a deffinative answer on what the width limit for a NC30 rear wheel actually is, before chain / swing arm fouling becomes and issue.

From experience you wont get a 5" or 5.5" with a 160 tyre on unless you run a 520 chain or space the chain over, FWIW i always run a 520 but if your set on a 525 and no spacers then you really are limited to a 150 rear ruling out any aftermarket rims as most are 5.5".

A 160 tyre will go on a 4.5" RVF wheel allowing a wider range of tyre options including supercorsa's which simply rock on a 400.

Its a real shame decent 18" tyres are all but gone (or soon will be) as the 30 looks a 100 times better with the 18" rim.

160/60/18 tires are perfect on the 4.5x18 vfr rim. That is the size fitment reccomendation from the tire companies. Now there are tons of them on the market, all the newer sport touring tires. These new generation ST tires are running dual compound, with super sport rubber on the sides.

Pilot Road 3, Angel ST, 023, etc. Not good for track days, but more than enough for street duty.

not at all, IMHO. Same width wheel as an rvf, so if so the same would apply.

Most of the newer middle weights run 160/60 on 4.5 rims as stock, sv/versis/etc, thus the new tires in that size.

When the nc30 was made tires were in the stone age. 110 fronts on 3.5" wheels ? I think most all road bikes now run 17x3.5 fronts and come with 120 tires.

I had a set of RC30 PVM's in that size, they fit fine you just need shallow head rear disc bolts

Thats not true.

SOME manufacturers spec their tyres as being OK to use on a 4.5 rim, some do not.

If you think of

Small - Perfect - Large

160 x 60 is the Large size for a 4.5" rim.

I think all will fit, but some MFGs do not recommend their tyre on this rim, so even while it fits there must be a reason they do not recommend it.

Dunlop, Bridgestone, Avon, and Continental all agree 160 is perfect for 4.5, and say 150 should be on 4.25.

And sv650 runs 4.5 rear rim, only 160 fitment listed for Michelin and Pirelli.

Michelin and Pirelli don't have rim recommendations I can find. If you run Shinko's then none of this matters
