New NC30 Brake discs - Opinions please
Having done a refresh of my ongoing shopping list ahead of my future project, I am quite happy with the way my stash of goodies is shaping up - even if the "Spendometer" total at the end does not make such nice reading
.
Anyway apart from an order to Probolts ti department and a couple of other bits that are easy enough to source, the only thing I think I still need to sort our are some new brake discs.
I will be running OEM wheels with OEM front end and OEM callipers as I think Mr Honda knew what he was doing and with a decent set of callipers (fully refurbed set ready to go on) and braking system (master cylinder rebuild on the cards) you can stand the NC30 on its nose with ease.....if you are so inclined, so I don't feel the need to change things.
My question to you good people is what brake discs do you reccomend from your personal experiances. I remember somone had issues with the EBCs saying they rusted at the sight of a damp rag, but other rated them. I have no knowldege of the others on offer - appart from the old OEM ones that are already fitted. I am not arrogant enough to say money is not an issue (of course it is) but as I am hopefully going to be doing a 'proper' job and refreshing the bike for several years to come I am looking for quality and not just the cheapest or the most 'bling'!.
As far as I can tell the options out there are:
OEM - @150 each
Armstrong - @275 pair
EBC Prolite - @270 pair
Arashi - 160 pair
Opinions, experiences and recomendations welcome

Re: New NC30 Brake discs - Opinions please
My EBC discs rusted very easily, and eventually they warped in extreme cold weather. They've changed the design now, however I don't know if that means anything else will have changed. I got a pair of (presumably Chinese) gold centred wavy discs from Wizbizltd on eBay, however I notice that none of that type are currently up for auction from any seller. They've only been on the bike since July and haven't covered many miles, however they have seen rain, very hot weather and I've also given them some pretty hefty applications while I was sussing out the travel on my new forks, and so far they've not rusted nor warped, so I'm happy. The EBC ones rusted to the pads the first time it rained! However, I won't go as far as to give a cast iron recommendation, as they've not seen winter, nor many miles in any conditions to be fair. I paid £100 for the pair, as the seller usually tried to extract between £180 and £250 for a pair on buy-it-now, but occasionally started them with no reserve at £100, and probably wondered why they only ever sold for that sum... lol

Hmmmm
So has anyone else been tempted to try out a set of the Chinese copy discs like Speedy?
Obviously the No1/project bike will get pucker items (I think probobly OEM), but I also have my second everday/track toy, bike and must admit I am tempted (for under 100GBP delivered) to try out a fresh set of the Chinese discs on there . I KNOW it is the brakes and why compromise - but as we have all said about the Chinese fairings, "Cheap and chearfull and do what they say on the tin", so maybe these are worth a punt.
After all if they turn to cheese i can always put the part old OEM ones straight back on.

I've covered 20,000 miles on a set of EBC X-Lite discs that I bought in 2009, 4 track days (I'm not exactly a slow rider) and a lot of fast road riding including several laps of the IOM TT course and they are still in fantastic condition. They have never rusted, the centres have not faded and they feel great.
I'd recommend them, however, the first set they sent were warped, but they replaced without any hassle at all.

^^ well, I am faster than Alex
, done more track miles (60 odd TD's) and the nurburgring (4.5 laps) on my Stealth rotors..had them years and they won't die.
not sure you get them anymore but they have been absolutely spot on.
EBC are great, I think you need to avoid the iron rich ones if you are bothered about rust.
You can probably get some very pukka rotors seeing as they are the same fitment as RC30s.....

Regarding EBC prolites, there are two types - race and road. The race discs are ductile iron and have blue centres,
The road discs are stainless steel and have gold centres.
Any rotors that contain iron will rust. Also if iron discs are not bedded in properly they will warp.
If you have gold centres and your rotors are rusting i would guess that the rotors have been replaced with iron ones.
I have standard rvf front end with the exeption of a set of race EBC Prolites and a set of PFM race discs both are ductile iron and do get some surface rust but fuck me do they stop.
My advice, if you want a show piece go for oem stainless - if you want performance PFM Ductile iron discs are the way to go.
