NC24 Tappets

Post by EvanTate »

Hi guys,

Was on the way home 2 weeks ago when my NC24 lost power and started making a horrible ticking sound. It's not consistent with the revs but sounds more like something is loose in the 2nd cylinder tappet area. Also, the 3rd cylinder exhaust stays cold. I'm thinking maybe something in the 3rd cylinder valve-train and is now bouncing around cylinder 2's valve-train? I'm used to working on cars but never gone into this much detail on a bike before.

Just wanted to know what to look for when I get the tappet cover off tomorrow. I've had it off before but that was simply changing the gasket. When it's sorted I'll be checking valve clearances all round too, but the only guide I found is for an NC30. Are the timing marks the same as the NC24.

Fishing for info at the moment only starting work on it tomorrow. Hoping I don't need spares as the shops are closed and I don't have money right now anyway. And need the bike for work so it's a vicious circle lol.

Any info is greatly appreciated as always :)
Regards,
Evan

Read the valve clearance guide on here, it has the info you need for the nc24 on it. Page 14 I think.

timing marks are not the same. Get yourself the RC24/36 manual and use that. The '24 has a 180 degree timing

Thanks man didn't realise that was there. Unfortunately can't organize a feeler gauge until payday in 2 weeks so I'm going to have this poor bike opened up every 2 weeks doing this and that lol

And thanks for the info CMSMJ1

So I opened everything up today and could see nothing wrong. Nothing was loose or broken. Could it just be that one of the clearances has become seriously too big and causing the knocking as the cam hits the shim? The knocking isn't consistent though as stated above...

no shims on an nc24, you adjust the tappets with a screwdiver (no parts to buy :D)

If one of them was making the noise it would be a regular rythm.. everytime that valve was opened the noise would happen.

Is it just at idle or throught the rev-ragne?

it doesn cost anything apart from feeler gauge to sort the clearnaces so do that first and see if it fixes the issue

Through the rev range but it doesn't always get faster with increased revs. I've been trying to locate the noise to s specfic part of the motor but to no avail. Maybe something has come loose from the gen or something.
