Supercharging
I am investigating the theoretical viability of supercharging the V4 engine. Hear me out.
The engine is to be used in the Formula Student competition at Silverstone.
link below for image - planing on dropping it at the back.
http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?hl=en&tb ... 1,s:0,i:72
I have a AISIN AMR300 supercharger which seems to be the perfect size for a 400cc engine.
so Why supercharging rather than the conventional ways of performance upgrades?
The competition states that the engine needs to breath through a 20mm restrictor.
So to save it from choking and to get any real power, we need more air.
what sort of alterations to timing/ valve lift / compression ratio should i expect?
How much boost could the engine handle?
I'll update on my progress / discovery

Re: Supercharging
Sounds interesting, where are you planning the supercharger to get it's drive from?

Re: Supercharging
I don't think this is the place to ask, I don't believe its been done before, and when most people that come along and say these things they usually end up binning the idea, forum user/member CHRI5 is the only guy I know with turbo and supercharger knowledge however on singes and IL4s

Re: Supercharging
Easy. Get a compressor from these guys.
http://www.rotrex.com/Home.aspx
We did this on a project i worked on with Yamaha. see the official video we made.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vwxw2dGJSxo
Plus another one from a test day at an airfield in France
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au7FR1kcNUQ
added a compressor to a 530cc TMAX maxi scooter. Did 200kmph. rapid as fook.

It don't matter if i'm fixin' it or ridin' it.

Re: Supercharging
In all honesty, I think you'll get a much better power return by fitting twin turbos, one for each pair of cylinders.
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

Re: Supercharging
The thing is doing it on the bike is a different story because of the space issue, here there would be no tank above the engine and space to the sides to drive the supercharger.
A&A performance do it on VFR800s so im not worried about the drive issue , just mimik the system to tap into crankshaft power - i reckon it wouldnt have a problem taking the extra moment of load - would it?
Twin turbos require alot of piping, and are more likely to need intercooling (even more weight)
also you have lag and the VFR really wants the extra low end power.
losing 10% efficiency vs turbo is a price to pay
what i would like to know is how much overlap in valve timing is there - so that i can estimate how much boost would be lost through the exhaust port?

Re: Supercharging
the AISIN, although a roots charger - is actually quite good - was used by subaru
operates up to 15,000 rpm :) 80L/s

Re: Supercharging
Yeah a turbo wouldn't be a suitable option for the v4 especially on the routing/positioning of the rear cylinders pipe work.
I think its do able with FI and a SC and a smaller tank or shifting the fueling up into the pillion area, (again small tank)
also maybe if this is short circuit race bike, or just outright proof of engineering skills then ditch the charging system to lose the extra load and mass that heavy fly wheel generates.
Id love to see it done, but its costly, timely, mainly require much dyno access and time, especially sorting a FI map from scratch maybe speak to member mruhl on that front for a base map maybe.

Re: Supercharging
why would you want to supercharge a 400 - you might as well buy a 600!

Re: Supercharging
Ive never supercharged or turbo'd an engine but ive been to uni and done engineering.
As i understand it you could workout the maximum limits of engine parts using maths.
maximum rev's, piston acceleration etc
Plenty of forums about that have specials, people will always help, oldschool suzuki may be worth a look.
