GSXR 400 restoration + all information on GK71F requested

Post by fireyphoenix1989 »

hi guys
new member 23 live near blackpool u.k

just picked up a non running GK71F for £315

The bike an hour after it arrived and had a quick wipe down ... plastics and such are in good condition other than the horrific paint job

began the tear down ... battery is fucked  agm replacement motobatt AGM fitted

frame cleaned up really nice and the exhaust system is in mint condition even has newish looking gaskets and stainless bolts

Gave the engine a bit of a clean and its all looking in good condition :)

Image

bloody weird carbs :? 1 slide & float bowl for two carbs never worked on anything like it

Image

brakes need doing .....binding on atm

Image

carbs stripped and being cleaned out thoroughly lol took ages too get the jets free ...

Image

and semi rebuilt ......IT LIVES  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZtNRM7QM1k
Oil leak from clutch cover but it looks like it has RTV not a proper gasket so an easy fix  i think

Good points ....
£315
appears too have a restored / new exhaust fitted as its mint not a single hole or sign of corrosion
Brand new michelin macadams front and read
brand new oxford hotgrips
new screen
new bar ends
runs and revs well (still needs a carb balence)
starts on the button now

Bad points ....
Needed a fair bit of work on the carbs and such too get it running
brakes were seized solid but i managed to re use the seals with a lot of tlc and bit 1000 grit sandpaper in the channels they sit in too get them square again
paint is some sort of brush on crap :?

may need too replace head gasket due too water in the oil going too try flushing it out first see if its not some thing stupid like water got in when the carbs were off over night

help needed ///what models gaskets fit this engine ? looks like maybe a bandit 400 motors gaskets might go in

i need ....
clutch and possibly cylinder head gaskets

soon as i get this issue sorted i can sync the carbs and MOT it

Bandit clutch gasket should fit not sure about the head gasket.
Robinson suzuki should be able to get them.

Managed too get some work done today ...

Dumped the oil and got this mess
Image

spoke too a friend who restores bikes and he said for the sake of seven pounds too just refill the oil as it "might" be condensate in the oil from the bike having been stood an unknown amount of time before i bought it .

any way decided too sort out the oil leak ...
Image

prior owner is a fool who used that blue stuff instead of a proper gasket . No wonder it was leaking

Image

made one myself out of the gasket paper i picked up on impulse a few weeks ago

Image

refitted and bam no more oil leak :)

decided too crack on and do the filter while i still had some light too work by ...nuts were a PITA too remove

Image

Its completely fecked

Image

Got new filter in fresh oil in and started it up ....running a lot better but getting white smoke so think it might be a blown head gasket after all  gonna try a full flush again just in case its just more contamination .

ah well cant be helped and if it needs doing .....it needs doing .
cant do anything till i get paid now however .

i brought same bike this week as a non runner, been sat for 6 years so very shabby looking. started stripping down, fairinfs are in good order. fuel tank has a pin hole and internal rust ( any help on locating a new one?), not tried turning engine over as battery is dead and as its been sat for so long i wanna put some oil in plug holes and turn over by hand. this is my first project and am beginning to think im outta my depth, lol.
