R1 Master cylinder for the front?

Post by Fzr400Welch »

Hello,

Heard this was a good forum but i seem to be getting no reply's? Not like newbies?!

Does the R1 5pw master cylinder fit straight on to the fzr or do you need to do other bits aswell?

Cheers.

I don't know the ratio on the original master cylinder although it could be stamped on the body of it somewhere. Once you've got that you'll need to know the ration of the R1 cylinder too and compare them.
If the R1 master is more powerful then you can get an on/off effect making it difficult to brake gently (coming up to traffic lights).

If your bike has the original rubber brake hoses change them first. Really the original stuff is ok if the calipers are clean and the seals, discs and pads are in good condition.

It is a good forum, but lots of the same questions get asked lots of times by lots of different people ;)

The 14mm R1/R6 axial master cylinder won't work on its own on the FZR400, you'll need to fit the calipers as well (either blue spots or gold spots). The FZR master cylinder is 5/8", which is around 15.8mm, so if you use the R1 master cylinder your brakes will feel very spongy.

You can use any braided lines you like, they're not bike-specific as such, but HEL and Goodridge tend to sell them by model because it's easier for people to ring up and say 'can I have a kit for a (insert bike here) please?' than ask for the correct length lines with the correct ends and the correct banjo bolts.

EC's right though, there's bugger all wrong with the standard 4 pots if you stick some braided lines on and keep the calipers clean, and the money you've saved by not needing to buy blingy levers from China will be better spent on fuel and just enjoying the bike

And hello

ps is this your first 'big' bike?

I apoligise if it has been asked many of times! But thanks very much for your reply.

I shall look at getting just braided hoses then? Around the £60 mark i guess? And just get my levers powder coated.

The bike is getting all brakes bled and set up again anyways so should be worth it.

Yes this is my first "big" bike did i make a good choice buying a FZR400R? Or should i of got somethin else?

Ive had bikes before which include, 2 x rs125, Mito, Nsr, Tzr, Xt125X and the one i have now which is a MX125.

FZRs are mint, far better than the H*nda tosh that usually litters the site ;) :ban:

Sorry if I came across a little patronising, I didn't mean to! It's your bike and you can do what you like to it, but just be aware that what ever you spend on it to tidy/tart it up you'll probably never get back when/if you do sell it, apart from braided lines and new tyres, that sort of thing.

Lets cut to the chase - what's wrong with the original levers ?
Usually they're silver or black, you can get other colours but then you make the bike look like a tart's handbag.

Sorry if I come across as a bit sharp but it's something we hear a lot of. The FZR400R is a good bike and will get you where you want to go, as it's your first bike I generally recomend you hold off spending on things that don't matter so much. Doing it this should get you a great and reliable bike

I had a MTX125

If you have just bought a 400R and are new on here your in the same boat as me!
I have probably got a bit more general bike experience but you pick it up as you go along.
What is your bike exactly ?,an R seems to be Fzr 400r 3EN2 from 1989 but others may correct me.
Remember people are not just waiting to answer forum questions.
You will get loads of help on here,I certainly am!
These bikes are getting on a bit now and mostly were "grey" imports to start with, you will soon know more about them than most parts suppliers.
Are your levers goosed or do you fancy different ones?
Beware of very cheap stuff from Asia mind,I personally know two men who fitted cheap shorty levers who's front brakes locked up due to clearance issues on pattern levers.
If its because you want span adjusters then the Kawasaki GPZ 500 had a cable clutch with span adjust lever but you need the mount aswell, about £12 on ebay complete!
Someone on here will tell you if a span adjust lever for the brake off another model will fit your reservoir.
Standard style pattern levers should be easy to get and cheap. I'll have a look round.
If you want braided hoses get the 3 line set because if you dont use the splitter connection with the original master cylinder and try to fit just two lines direct to calipers the union will hit the clocks as there is very little clearance to start with.Others have tried!
What are the brakes like at present?
