Rear brake pads - what are these?

Post by StrayAlien » Sat Aug 11, 2012 4:29 am

Hi all,

Just replacing the rear pads on an NC30 race bike. First time changing them since I got the bike.

However, I bought a set of replacement pads from the local Honda dealer and they look *nothing* like what is on there at the moment. Exhibit A:

The outer two are the current pads. Anybody know what pads these are? They are not very broad and as such have left a lip on the inner part of the disc surface, so I figure it is probably best to stick the same pad make/model on there again.

Many thanks,

Greg.

Do the new ones fit, the mounting/locating lugs are different to your old ones.

Does the bike start better with the OEM battery lead fitted?

Had a look at the SBS web site and the 614 is for 90-92 model vfr400. Your old pad shape looks like the pad shape that SBS says is for a 87-90 model SBS P/N 593. Hope that helps.

Hi Magg,

First the pads. Thanks. It'll check that the SBS site. It seems then my '94 NC30 might have a few odd parts on it. I didn't get the new pads out of the box because they just look like they're not the right ones and they cost me $55. Yes, the lugs are way different - no way they are going to fit in the calipers. I noticed that after posting.

Next the battery lead: you beat to me posting about it! (I had a day in garage today and then took dog for a walk before sitting down here to post about the lead). I ordered a lead and it arrived this week but I've not had time to check it out. But screw the neighbours today the bike gets started.

But .. I was sent the wrong lead - they sent the lead that goes from the starter relay to the starter motor. Nevermind, despite the length, it was worth a test anyways so I attached it to -ve and frame - and the bike just jumped to life when started! Fantastic, much more enthusiastic than before.

After each day at the track I drain the carbs by disconnecting the (quick cut) fuel line and letting the bike use all the juice in the bowls, so on the next start to has some work to do before things get going - this normally feels a little strained but today it was very happy.

So, looks like that may have been it. Sometimes the bike did start well before and it wasn't a very cold day today so can't be 100% sure it is resolved - but it sure sounded a lot happy turning over so I am pretty confident.

And screw buying another lead - I'll just nick out to the auto-store tomorrow and gets some parts and make the new lead myself.

So, magg/josh - thanks for your help resolving the electrical problem - that is probably the first electrical fix I've been involved in (recall: I said I was an electrical nong). Feels great.

Thanks again.

Greg.

Rear brakes on track bikes don't get used much, at least not when I was racing so any compound should do. you should be able to buy cheaper than $55 for something to keep the caliper pistons off the disk.

I take it you will just get a large lug and shorten the lead the wrecker sent you. If your auto shop does not have individual lugs of the correct size, try jaycar or similar electrical supply store.

Yes, thanks, so it seems. A check of the engine and frame numbers shows the bike to be 92 onwards. It looks that sometime in its life the rear caliper has been replaced with an earlier model.

Thanks all.
