new exhaust studs - loctite into head or not?

new exhaust studs - loctite into head or not?

I have new exhaust studs to fit, should I use loctite where they fit into the engine or not? I'll use copper slip on the exhaust nuts themselves but wondered if I should use copper slip or loctite or nothing at all on the studs into the head?

I wouldnt personally.
only because you can bet when you want to remove the pipe in a year or two's time you know the studs are going to be rusted solid. at least the studs should unwind all being well

i would say no aswell, just put a little copper slip on them before you put them in

It is common practice to lock studs with threadlock, to prevent the stud coming out with the nut.
However, I would never do that with exhaust fixing studs as they tend to seize both ends.
In the old days brass nuts were used that we easier to undo.

Use copper slip both ends, and wind the stud into the port with 2 nuts locked on, if the threaded ends are different then the flat end of the stud goes in the port, rounded is the nut end.
Always wind the stud tight to the bottom of the hole, less likely to pull out.

Perfect advice from arsey30.

I've done this for a long time with my bikes and never had any problems.

Light application of some coppergrease to stop the studs rusting up and sizeing.

Make sure to fully locate the stud into the head (as above, a couple of nuts locked together on the thread make this easy) - Don't overtighten though it's easy to snap them.

Heat deactivates Loctite.

When you have an old threadlocked bolt, heat is your best friend.

Not going to help much on exhaust studs.
