Motorsport Engineering Dissertation Ideas?? Cams/FI

Post by VFR400+ »

Hi all Im coming up to the end of my second year of a Motorsport engineering course and starting to look forward to next year and dissertation ideas.

I had considered converting my nc30 to run FI however realise that most of this would be electronic based, thats not a problem in itself however its not really the area of the industry i want to go in to and it seems the dissertation is a good way to open the door for the first job. Also its not really achieving anything ground breaking.

Another idea that crossed my mind was to look at developing a new performance cam profile, just wondered if there were any cams out there for the nc30 or if people think the V4 would respond well/badly to different cams.

Thought as Im likely to be stripping the engine down this summer to get to the bottom of my overfueling issues, probably end up replacing the piston rings. It would be a good time to take measurements of internals and clearances.

Also very open to any other ideas :)

You say you want to use it as a door opener, which door do you want opened?

It is wothwhile to consider where you want to go when studying, something I never really did and regret it now. There's absolutely loads of F1 stuff in the UK and McClaren road car stuff going on in Weybridge or Camberley, Surrey, so if you'd be happy to move that way a bit, maybe you could get yourself involved in that?

Why not send some contacts in those directions, and ask what skillsets they are after recruiting for?

How about a conventional swing arm conversion , maybe a gullarm like the CBRs , then an exhaust to work around it, and finally a fork conversion to compliment and new rear end. A complete redesign of the suspension system with an upgrade in lighter wheels, better brakes, a performance exhaust ......
It's not having what you want but wanting what you've got....Loud ,Proud and Modified ....

Not really complex enough for a years disscertation that will most likely be carried across into my masters year.

Had a thought rather then develop just a performance cam looking into some sort of VVT system using a progressive cam profile rather than the half effort on the VFR800s, although this would be better of a FI system to allowing the fueling to adapt to suit than the 400.

Could you look at turbochargers/superchargers?

Maybe build two engines, one turbo'd and one super'd for comparison on performance, fuel economy, reliability, etc.

I can help out with analysis equipment :peace:
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.
