project nc21/24 advice required!

Post by Vfr400/tbird »

Im looking at rebuilding my ageing nc21 over the next few months some of the planned changes are going to include better forks and front brakes.
However apart from some understanding of a possible cbr600 conversion that maybe possible im realy unsure of the route to follow in finding a suitable front end!

My ideal bikes would be any of the the yamaha blue dot series ie, r1, r6 and fazers and/or anything that has great brakes and decent damping!

I have already rebuilt the nc21 forks and after just 1 month or less they were shot again, its likely to ocur again and as the bikes either going down the street fighter route or the endurance rep scheme i need a front end that looks the parts aswell as works well!

They dont have to be a straight up fit but would be nice if they were close!

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
thanks

Sell it and get something better would be my honest opinion.

Expensive for a bike that'll be worth next to nothing.

NC30 is a good starting point, already has much better forks, brakes and wheels and frame.

If you are willing to throw away money then i'd look into.

NC29 fork uppers with yoke, clip ons switchgear and throttle etc (will have to rewire)
NC30 fork lower legs with brake calipers, discs and nc30 wheel.

This will give you a good front setup.

As for the rear, early vfr750 wheel with a 160 tyre. Might have some chain issues but you can work around it.

Rear shock will still need looking at.

Well it's upto you!

However, with the money you'll spend, you'll be close to the cost of an NC30, which goes just as well and handles and stops a lot better right off the bat. Also has better tyres available for it and more 'off the shelf' goodies and mods you can do.

I own both and the 24 is limited in what can be done easily.

The 24 is in stock spec as i've never really needed to do anything else to it, too expensive and I just enjoy the bike for what it is, I considered lots of things like the forks etc but all they'd do is make it closer to a 30, which I already own.

If it's a 21 you own you can bolt a rear NC24 swining arm straight on, but then that'll only give you the same size tyre/ wheel as an NC24.

With the 21 swining arm you should be able to put a wider choice of rear wheels in there.

a 17 front and rear setup would improve tyre chioce but the 16/18 stock size of the 2x is what makes it so steerable, even if the tyre choice isn't that great, you can still have plenty of fun on the street with it in standard condition.

Im planning on buying a nc30 later this year, however i realy want to do somthing a little diffrent with the nc21 as its a bike that i feel very attached too and want to make it in to a bike i enjoy not just for the ride.
Im going to have a good go at sorting the oem forks out first as with a decent powder coating of the calipers and bottoms of the forks im sure there look the part, however thats if there any good once rebuild for the secound time.

Im going to order the parts now and have a crack at them over the weekend if i get time!

ill report back with the progress of the project if anyone has any inspiration it would be most appreciated
