is there a missing bolt also temp gauge its 2 probs

Post by wedge »

hi...i finally got round to working on the 3tj after buying it last year...i knew there was alot oil behind the rad on the cylinders..i knew it be coming from rocker cover..but is there a missing bolt???....as you look along the front of the rocker cover(not on top with the other bolts) right in the middle behind the rad theres a little bit that juts out..i've slid a finger down doesn't seem to have a bolt in it should there be,just it being so tight i can't look down to see????.......also i noticed temp gauge no moving at all,,any idea's so i don't have to follow the loom back..and is the temp sensor the one in front of the oil window on the right of the engine????

the jutting out bit should mate with the head exactly, if it doesnt, then the rocker cover is on the wrong way round. There isnt a bolt through it, it's just the 8? silver ones that hole the cover on i believe.
the thermostat is on top of the engine iirc! think you are looking at the oil level sensor??? but it's been a while since i've done anything with either of them!

Have a look at the semi circular infils at the end of the cams - if they're cracked then replace the gasket but if you think it's an oil leak from the cam cover then chances are the gasket's to blame.

The 600 and 400 cam cover gaskets are the same if you renew it now you can reuse it on a 600 later
