Quick query, when my mate changes his oil & filter he always pours new oil into the filter before fitting it. Why would this be necessary?

So much easier to fill to the correct level. If you don't and rely on the window or dipstick, once you've got the bike running, the oil circulates and fills the filter. when you switch off and it settles, the oil level on the window/dipstick will have dropped quite significantly.
In most cases, the filter capacity is more than the difference between MIN and MAX on the window/dipstick.

Ah I see, thanks for that I don't recollect it being written in the workshop manual which I always follow for correct oil capacity etc.

I always follow the OEM sticker on the engine case as well as the manual - 3 different oil levels are inidicated. One of the quoted oil levels cater specifically for a new filter...

if you fill the oil filter, how do you stop all the oil spilling out when you turn it on its side to it screw in????

Cunning and speed

After an oil and filter change I just crank the engine with the ignition off until the oil light goes off (and a few more secs for good measure).

I saw this oil fill technique on the tv program ' a car/bike/4x4/helicopter/mg is born' and must admit it can't do any harm, as long as you don't spill oil all over your drive/fairings/hand/arms etc.
