Nc24 tick over question

Post by sp00ka » Sun Mar 11, 2012 8:14 pm

Not a Marjor one but I can't seem to keep the bike ticking over at low revs or at a nice idle if thsts the word ,
Every time come up to a junction 3 out of 5 time it will idle out !!
I played with tick over finger screw on the side of the carb but when I get it about 1.5 rpm I pull back the throttle it sits at 3rpm or more ! And if i put the screw to low it just cuts out ! Any ideas to slove this I'm fed up of using the back brake at junctions so I can keep the bike reving

Check the throttle is moving freely and the throttle arm on the carbs is closing properly. Sounds like they're sticking or you've got an air leak.
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

Sounds like a few common things.

Something isn't set right anyway!

Air leak.. this will cause erratic idle, often the revs will be slow to return to idle... if you rev it up in neutral to around 3000rpm then let off the throttle does it return quickly to idle?

Overly rich / lean.

This is caused by a combination of float heights and pilot screw setting. If it's too rich when you rev it up it will drop below idle when you let off the throttle and then return to idle, sometimes cutting out if moving.

Overly lean.. will cause similar symptoms to air-leak (hanging rpm')

Bad carb balance will usually just cause an uneven sounding idle but you shuold be able to hold the rpm unless they are miles out.

I'd thing air-leak as the first thing.. rubbers are either not sealed properly or too old (loose / cracked).

Make sure the carbs are setup properly... pilot circuit passageways clean, pilot screws all have their washers and spring and o-ring on them and start at 2.0 turns out.

Make sure the rubbers are ok and are sealing properly

Check the vaccum hose isn't split and the screws and washers that blank the carb balance points off are all inplace, else this will give you airleak.

Sounds like it could be any one of the problems ?
I do find the bike to Rev up to about 3rpm on its own and then settle after a while
The bike does take longer than normal to idle for 4-5 rpm down !
The bike only seems to cut out when riding and coming to a stop !
Don't no a fat lot about taking carbs apart but willing to try ! Just not sure about pilot screws ?
Should I start by taking tank off air filter , cars etc and check rubbers and pipes ?

A good carb clean and overhaul followed by a balance might give you some benefit but firstly i'd check for air leaks as it's easy to do.

Get a can of carb-cleaner with a long straw.

Get the bike running and spray around the rubbers with the straw, if the revs drop then there is an air-leak, as the carbs will replace air with the fluid sucked in from around the rubbers.
