NC23 Swing Arm Needle bearing removal...

Post by Mingernick »

I give up any ideas?

The Haynes Manual says just tap them out... that worked for the rollers on the otherside... I then soaked the needle side with WD40... didn't work... the bearing has now colapsed and all the needles & inner section are now out... decided to invest in a Blind bearing puller... still won't budge... tried heat... Got some Dremel type cutting discs to try to cut the outer piece into sections, nearly worked but the tool melted (not made by Dremel)... all I can think of now is to get the whole thing drilled out or buy a second hand swing arm... I can't understand why it would be stuck so tight.

The origonal bearings were ok, I only wanted to remove them to get the arm powder coated.

The whole project has now ground to a halt as I need to complete the rear end before I can start restoring the front end.

i had the same issue with the roller bearings, i got a dremel type tool with a sander attachment and ground it down to nothingness then got a little flat flat screw driver and prized it up and pulled it out with pliers, worked fine without damaging the swingarm where the bearing sits..

Thanks DK-Tandy... I ended up taking it to the local blacksmith... I thought it would need to be drilled out or something.

He just ran a line of weld around the inside of the remaining bearing case, then as the weld cooled it contracted the shell & it just popped out of the swingarm! It took him 10 mins & they only charged me £8!!!

Job done.
