disc bolts snapped
ok so thought id threadlock my disc bolts , upon tightning them up ive snapped one
, god knows how, didnt think id put that much force on it , so whats the best method for removing it , not much thread showing if any, and ive had enough for today so by this time tomoz the locker will have gone off, (its non permanent of course)

Re: disc bolts snapped
if there is little thread left, maybe a small locking tool plier can be used to get the remaining thread out?

Re: disc bolts snapped
You could try warming it up with a blow torch, will help melt the thread lock and cut a slot in and use an impact driver to get it out, or weld a nut on, tho i've never tried this.

Re: disc bolts snapped
been there done that - or should i say i purchased a wheel and disks (from someone who shall remain nameless) with one disk bolt snapped off, to be ground down a tad and glued back on - yes glued
Some quality stud extractors, heat to expand the alloy a bit, and slowly drill the centre out and use a stud extractor again with some local heat on the alloy - and out it comes.

Re: disc bolts snapped
if anything mate they tend to be a softer metal, so a lower tensile strenght like 8.8 or 10.9, allowing them to flex . thats why they can easily be over tightend as the 8 and 9 reffure to the max %...so 80% and 90% they should be torqed too so the bolt is working at its strongest. thats why these bolts should never be reused once torqed then removed.Deviant400 wrote:sighs, yea my own stupid fault just now im thinking ill replace the lot now as there a bit old and the chances are ive overtightened the bloody lot so as soon as i wang the anchors on pop pop pop go the heads then certain death ,

iv never used stainless on any parts that need this slight flex to accure, such as the disc bolts, caliper bolts, sprocket bolts etc......although pro bolt wouldnt sell them if they wernt safe, but you should deffo use a locking agent like loctite or thread wire them together.

Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

Re: disc bolts snapped
What is this 8.8 or 10.9 you are talking about? Last time I checked tensile strength was measured in MPa and stainless steel is 500+lizard821000 wrote:if anything mate they tend to be a softer metal, so a lower tensile strenght like 8.8 or 10.9, allowing them to flex . thats why they can easily be over tightend as the 8 and 9 reffure to the max %...so 80% and 90% they should be torqed too so the bolt is working at its strongest.
