fly wheel stuck a goodun

Post by spud »

hi peeps

just spent the last 2 hours trying to get my fly wheel off so i can fit a new alternator to my bike , spoke to rick o last night and he said to have a mate sit on bike put it in 6th gear with the back brake on to stop the wheel /engine turning over , cool i thought not a prob , 8-) , but as i say spent this morning trying to remove it and all i keep geting is the rear wheel turning as i try to undo the fly wheel nut  , my friend weighs 14 stone so should be a big enough lump on the back of bike , even put the front end of the bike agianst a wall to help but no joy  , so was wondering if any one khew of any way apart from what ive tryed to get the bugger off its one of the last things to do to get my bike back on road

cheers spud

A fly wheel puller helps!

Thy aren't too expensive, someone on here may have one local to you that you could borrow?

Does Rick O sell them?

Edit, just re-read the post, Sorry I read it wrong! So just getting the nut off is the problem first?

As Rick said, something to prevent the rear turning - like a friend sitting on it.

I also find that if you use a long ratchet bar on the socket, it gives you more leverage, and makes it seem easier/ less effort.

Hope this helps?

roll the bike to a wall, and sit him on again and hold the back brake, if that wheel turns then for a start your back brake is fucked (not unusual there shit as standard!),

or as mr SHOUTY said try a impact gun!

Bit of 2x4 through the rear wheel to lock it and try it. If not, then as said by RICK (WHO'S KEYBOARD IS BROKEN AND NEEDS A NEW CAPS LOCK BUTTON) and the other Rick (our resident porn-star) get an impact gun on it.

It's best to lock the flywheel against the the footrest using a simple holding tool made from two flat pieces of metal with 8mm cap head screws in them. The heads of the screws fit nicely in the holes in the flywheel. If you have a stubborn one and you try and lock it through the transmission, I've seen teeth snapped of a gear. Not what you really want!

DIY impact gun, place ring spanner over nut and hit ring spanner with hammer. You will still need the screw in puller to get the flywheel off. If puller is hard to come by then a bolt of same size thread can be a substitute.
