Marks bike - reserve not working?

Post by MarkT »

Hi hope you all had a good Xmas and new year! I was riding out today when I completely ran out of fuel with the switch just on the main position. With no fuel the reserve switch would still make the pump run so I guess the switch is ok. What would be best to chase down what is wrong? As a point I have had my cdi doctored by bendy but he is sure reserve is not affected. I am puzzled how it went dry and did not run out with a couple of litres left.
The sensor in the tank is no longer available and I hate riding with no reserve!
Thanks
Mark

the reserve switch is just a one time reminder

when the fuel goes below a certain level in the tank the fuel sender sends a signal to the cdi which then fu*ks with the coils and it only fires on 2
as soon as you flick the reserve switch it tells the cdi you know your running low on fuel and carries on as normal

so if you went strait to empty without the spluttery engine bit, then i'd say the sender is US
check all the connections, reserve switch and sender and make sure their all clean and connected correctly if these are ok then i recon you'll need to find a working second hand fuel sender
or start counting the miles and fill up early ;)

was the switch set res without you noticing ???

When you do run out they take a bit of starting.

Thanks guys, when I took the switch out of the fairing ages ago I put it in backwards and had a lot of trouble! But it was not a one hit if you turned the run witch off also so it must reset then. However can you imagine trying to get a sensor these days!
Cheers

There must be a way of testing the sender with a multimeter? Two wires but I don't know if there is continuity when the tank is full or if the tank is empty? Just don't know which way around they would have designed it?

this was the best i could come up with, i don't think it matters which way the switch works as long as you have continuity one way and not the other it should be ok, give it a try and see
feel free to lob some constructive criticism my way if you come up with a better way or i'm well off the mark

Thanks for that, it was what I was thinking of doing! It does seem a bit strange that it has happened after fitting the modded cdi but I do think that is a red herring !! But I would have thought continuity would be when the fuel runns down.
Thanks again!!

I think I might start by swapping the cdi back as a test and carry a can on the back seat, when I went out a few days ago it went on reserve but needed a couple of switch on and off to get it going? But the rest of the way home I turned the switch back to main and after a while started to splutter and put it back to reserve and it would run again. I can't remember which cdi I had in damn!! Start back to when it has been working and if it's still the same then investigate further! I hate not having a reserve I didn't know how far I could ride today arghh!

Do you set your trip odometer when you fill up ??
Look for about 130miles then fill up -

You can aslo hear difference in the sound the bike makes the empty tank resonates so you get a deeper louder engine note. :ugeek:
