New guy!

Post by CBR_2009 » Tue Nov 15, 2011 11:05 pm

Hi all!
First of many questions i'm sure.
Just got a '90 model NC29 that has been stood for about 5 years roughly. Stuck a new battery in it and it tries to start but has no petrol in it.
While i'm waiting for a few bits to arrive, is there anything I should check, mainly engine wise?
Or secondly. Would it be a good idea to stick some gas in it and try to start it?

Howdy.
If it's been stood, you'll wanna start at the tank and work your way though. Tank filter , fuel filter , clean out the carbs. Check the float valves aren't stuck shut.Change the oil and filter and spark plugs.

Thanks for the reply.

Which one's the tank filter? Didn't know there was one.
Fitted new spark plugs and oil filter. Got a new fuel filter on it's way too. Will be ordering a new air filter too.
Thought i'd have to check the carbs as well, never had a carb'd bike before so wouldn't know where to start with it. Has anyone done a step-by-step guide to carb checking/cleaning do you know or would a haynes book be good enough?
One other question. Inside of the fuel tank seems pretty manky, any idea on how to clean it out? (Not sure if it's rust or general grime)

If you unscrew the fuel tap there's a filter in there. :o
Haynes is pretty comprehensive. Got an oily copy sat next to the nc29 i'm rebuilding at the moment.

Ahhh yeah, fuel tap. Never had one on a bike before so totally forgot about that.
Might need to clean the carbs as it wont start. Fitted new spark plugs and oil filter. Fuel pump is doing it's job of shifting the fuel, but the starter just keeps turning and nothing else happens.
The carbs hard to get off and clean?

Hello and welcome.
If it has been stood for that long with fuel in it then get shut of the fuel thats in it as it must be tired by now.
Clean the carbs is a must also and hopefully after you have done the other jobs you state it should fire up.

Yeah, i've gone and made it a whole lot worse for myself now. Took the carbs off earlier and managed to partially snap off part of a carb case where the TPS screws onto. Now i'm looking for a new set of carbs....
