Help im stuck :(

Post by quinny-fzr4003tj »

I've had my 3tj on the road now for almost a year no problems atall until last week when it failed to start off the button or via bumping.

I took the tank off and low & behold the inline filter was dirty as! blaming this to my old flakey tank which ive cleaned out a few times, replaced this and clean the tap filter and replaced the inline, aswell as this i took the carbs off cleaned the bowls and jets blew them through with my old faithful air compressor ....reassembled and still no joy :(

the fuel system seems to be working up until the bowls i'm thinking they bowls arent emptying ??

unless its a timing issue or something like that?

ohh and i checked all the plugs and ht leads all functioning properly :( which adds further to my confusion

help!

right having had the carbs off and apart, did you see that the jets were clear, if you've got a lot of crud in the filter and tank the as good as the filter is it wont have stopped it all, your gunna have to rip them down again, take the time to do it one at a time and make sure you get the jets out and perfectly clean, you could invest in a ultrasonic cleaner for them or find someone who has one, that would help, once you have done all this check the float levels, someone will be along in a mo to tell you how to do it, clean your tank out! use value cola lots of it and it will dissolve the crud, you could use vinegar but you need loads (to fill the tank) and cola although not as effective will be cheaper. if all else fails i have a set of carbs off a 3en2 you could try.

edited to add, might be worth checking the air screws are set right and that there are no issues with the rubbers and that the carbs are seated properly in the rubbers. then when its running balance the carbs.

There are 2 more filters, one on top of the fuel tap and one in the carbs where the fuel hose goes on.

Next thing to try is starting the bike on carb cleaner. Put the battery on some jump leads. With the tank and airbox off lift the carb slides and give the a good spray down their sniffing ends. Thumb the starter and keep it in top up the cleaner as you go.

Now if this doesn't start it .... then you need a compression test. Do it dry and wet, to see if the valves are sealed. Or you could just check the valve clearances anyway.

if it's being caused by a dirty tank it'll just keep happening

you can clean the tank with B&Q "no nonsense metal cleaner and restorer" it's a mild acid and about £5 for 5 ltrs
mix it up 2 llts hot water & 1 ltr cleaner (as much as you need to fill the tank half way) and leave it to soak over night then give it a bloody good rinse

you have to make 2 small plates to cover the holes where the tap and fuel sender go, i used some thin mild steel plate and a bit of rubber to stop it leaking cos the tap and sender won't like the acid bath ;)

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but is the fuel pump working? Unscrew one of the drain screws on a float bowl using a bit of rag to catch any fuel. Turn on the ignition listen for fuel pump clicking and fuel should come out. If nothing flick kill switch on off and you should get fuel out.

Mr EC suggestion about carb cleaner in the intakes will rule out ignition faults but seems strange to me it was running fine one day and nothing the next?

Hi everyone thanks for all your responses

Its firing now but only when the carbs are bi-passed either with fuel or carb cleaner as EVil suggested i think i will do a compression test and do the valves aswell whilst im
Tinkering best look after the old girl :)

I dont think the diaphrams are opperating correctly :s fuel just isnt leaving the bowls all the jets are clear... Maybe this was wrong of me but i removed a pin from one of the carbs and set up the fuel pump to the carb with a spare battery to see if fuel would leave the bowl with the pin out and it did, there are no pin holes or tears in any of the diaphrams... Arghhhh

Cleaned the tank again today despite only doing it last week with pertrol and bolts :p this time i used some of that acid metal cleaner as suggested came out great hopefully this will prevent this a second
Time , i was tempted to use tank liner but my
Friend advised me against this ....

Sorry about the grammar im using my phone

Could anyone help me
With this carb problem, pretty sure thats all that stopping her niw :(

I don't get this? Everthimg is working but no fuel? As it runs with neat fuel you can rule out valves plugs compression valve clearances! If any of them were at fault you would have known it on your last ride and or it would not start on neat fuel.

Taking the pin out in float chamber would allow fuel IN and it would flood into the engine if the carbs are in place or all over the floor if off the bike?

Are you sure the fuel pump is working and fuel leaves the tank ok? If the fuel pump is on the bike and the tank is off, does it click like mad on turning on ignition which means relay is working and the pump is going through the motions. If that is ok then put the end of the fuel pipe in a jar or something and take pipe off carb. On turning on ignition ( not safe to start!) does fuel come out of carb pipe? If it does then I am totally lost!!!!

With what you have done it should try and start at least one cylinder as fuel will be going through the starter jet at least.

If you really want to do valves, please come and do mine

The fuel system works up until the bowls its flowing freely through filters from the tank to the pump and then up into the carbs. Thats why im
Wondering if theres something wrong on the other side of the carbs -> the diaphrams and them
Not pulling out the pin, i know the pin and float levels are as standard i checked that tonight

Im just as lost as you i cant understand it how can these mikunis be such a problem especialy all of a sudden if there was signs of deteriation in performance over a period of time id understand it, thats why its worrying me :(

Noticed you were looking at derestricting yours and ec mentioned bendy his webaites http://www.sfpracing.com/ im
Thinking about doing it aswell just didnt fancy the max box didnt want to disable my
Speedo if thats what happens im not sure :p haha

Going to check the diaphram breathers and stuff tomorrow after work dint know why i havent already :D

Hi wel im lost!! When i was going to get mine derestricted I was going to get bendy to do it. I tested mine and it reved to over 15500rpm as it was but i have a very funny setup and not tried the top speed restriction as i never go that fast!!

As for mine I in the end fitted 3 sets of carbs until one set worked!! It would always start but rev like crazy and i rebuilt them all so many times but it always tryed to start on any set.
have you tried blocking the air intakes right off and putting choke on and seeing if there is any life? the suction alone would/should bring some fuel through the starter jet so it should at least cough!!

I mean you are not getting anything right? Not even a stab at starting??

This must be fixable without drastic measures surely!!!

I just seen your history and you had a similar problem about a year ago where it would only run for a couple of miles?? Did you fix that?? :?:
