How would you fix this exhaust?

I recently changed my rear shock, and discovered when removing the exhaust that the pipes joint underneath the engine do not fit together properly.

The guy before had used some kind of heat wrap to bulk it out, the gap is around 2mm all around. I was thinking of cutting two slots in the larger piece of exhaust and squeeze the pipe onto the smaller one, and perhaps weld it for extra strength. You cannot put another piece of pipe over as the larger pipe has a lip. See pictures below.

I tried 'bodging' it with a few tin cans and epoxy putty, as I had a trackday at Snetterton but it did not hold out long, but I did not get questioined about it so happy days.

What would you do? I am not keen on buying a new set of pipes.

Is it just a standard system? If so this is what usually happens to them after a while. Geoff33 sells properly repaired second hand systems.

The collars where the pipes join together are made from mild steel as opposed to stainless and rust away like you've got.

Only proper repair is to cut them off and weld new collars on (of whatever type of material you want)

As mentioned above you can buy a replacement / repair pre-done or buy the colars and do it yourself if you have welding gear or get a metal shop to do it.

I'm in the same boat with mine. they're gummed up with exhaust putty.
I have a welder, where can I source new collars to weld on., does anyone sell them? has anyone written a guide or posting on fixing these. I have no idea what's under the gum-gum but it would be nice to see a photo of what good ones should look like so I know what I need to do!

Here is the repaired exhaust.

This is what the collars originally look like, just cut the old ones off back to good steel and replace with equivalent. Can either make some or maybe able to get pre-fabbed ones.

There is no permanate fix other than to grind off the scrap metal and weld on repackages in SS. But there are plenty on here that can help.

I will have a look tomorrow , i`m not sure if i have enough tube to make some collars up for you. Remember you have to TIG weld them on or else the mild weld will look crap after a while!

great stuff thanks, i've never tig. only mig, though it will do stainless i've never tried.
