NC30 Choke not working - Fix

Post by 265chemic »

Thought this might help someone else out;

My choke had never worked properly (when full on and starting from cold it would rev to ~4000 then drop back and stall) - I had cleaned the carbs but overlooked the choke pickup - its the 3rd brass one next to the main and pilot jets in the float bowl, and has no hex end on it - just a brass cylinder with a hole in the middle. Turns out the choke pickup holes are tiny - they are at the bottom of the bigger hole in the choke pickup, you should be able to see them when you shine a bright light down there (I couldnt cos they had some corrosion / buildup). The second test to see if they are blocked is to blow through them. - If you cant see them try getting a small safety pin or needle and probe around the bottom of the pickup hole, this sorted mine out. If you can now see them but cannot blow through you might need some compressed air, carb cleaner, or ultrasonic cleaning. I also checked the choke piston bores (the assembly is held in by plastic nuts on the side of the carbs) 2 of which were clean - I couldnt get to the 2 on the secondary choke linkage though, had a quick look but didnt get them out as I was confident I'd solved the problem with the choke pickup holes - but if anyone has done this i'd be curious.. Im thinking the carbs may have to be seperated? Of course, all this was checked after confirming the choke lever / cable arrangement was ok.

Have a look here viewtopic.php?f=24&t=14524 for pictures - that should explain it all.
