I need the bright lights as i do most of my riding at night and notice this really has an effect on the battery charge (life).
Will it cause any harm or is it no problem at all to replace the standard spec battery???

The only limitation is physical size that fits in the battery space. How does night riding affect your battery charge, does the battery go flat, what wattage headlights bulbs are you running?

The std battery is a 7AH one - YTX7. You can fit a YTX9 in the same slot, it is 15mm taller.
If your chargin system is not able to keep up then I would be checking it out.

Your power comes from the generator.
It supplies 350watts of electric.
What isn't being used up by the electrical system is sent to charge the battery.
It'd be quite difficult to use up the 350watts unles your running someting stupid like 200 watt bulbs!?
The battery is just used to start the bike and supply power when the system isn't charging (at idling and low revs) by 5000rpm the system should be fully charging the battery.
Perhaps you have a dying battery or charging system fault.
Fitting a larger battery wont' solve the problem
