More than likely your exhaust gaskets, mine used to do the same untill I finally got round to replacing them.

Check that it is running on all 4 cylnders.
If 1 is not running at low revs, that piston will rattle.

Run it from cold until it will tick over without choke.
Stop the engine and allow the exhaust to cool, but not the engine [a few minutes]
Start up and run at tickover or fast tickover and check each exhaust is equally warm.
Rev hard and check all are hot.
You can disconnect 1 plug at a time and see if it does/does not alter the engine speed, but fronts are hard to reach.

Not trying to be condescending but are you sure it's not a loose chain?
Mine had a rattle and I couldn't figure it out for ages, checked all the brackets, fairings and mounts to no avail. Then one day I decided to put it on the rear paddock stand, turn it on and let the clutch out (not the best idea but it was secured to the paddock stand) and the chain was bashing in to the swingarm making it rattle - same as you at higher revs you couldn't hear it.

The gaskets are cheap, but prices do vary between shops.
Front gaskets are easy to replace, but the rear gaskets you have to drop the engine out to relace them (or so it seems).

Gaskets are about 2-4 pounds a pop. Depends where from.
The engine doesn't have to be dropped to do the rear gaskets.
