N in every gear with clutch in.

Post by DK-Tandy »

i fitted an alarm, took it out for a spin to notice whenever i pull the clutch in to change gear, the netural light comes on. i was playing with the clutch (free-rolling) and when i released it past a certain point (biting point) the light went out it it caught on the gear..

i got home and removed the 2 wires from teh clucth as it was an electrical issue and it went back to perfect..

question is, what do those 2 wires do?

i removed them and the bike still starts?

EDIT: it still want start in gear without clutch it, not tried it with clutch in..

It probably wont start in gear with the clutch in either.

I had the issue with the neutral light coming on whenever the clutch was pulled in a few years ago. I disconnected the wires going to the clutch and left it like that for years with no problems. It was only when working on another bike with starting issues that i came across a little thing called a diode that plugs into the loom and does some sort of electrical magic to stop the bike starting in gear.

I replaced the diode on mine and then plugged the clutch wires back in. Neutral light as as normal now and the bike starts in gear with the clutch in.

It may be that you have disturbed something while fitting the alarm and have 'broken' the diode.

There is a safety setup whereby the clutch will start:
if the bike is in neutral,
or
if the bike side stand is up AND the clutch is in. You can understand it by staring at the wiring diagram and remembering what a diode does.

By unplugging the clutch switch, you will only be causing yourself a problem if you want to start the bike with it in gear (e.g. that one occasion a year when you stall it or, more likely, it cuts out at idle when cold).

This seems to be the best so far. it was just a case of unplug and plug the new one in.
