Carbs that fit the 3TJ
Bike 1990. What models of fzr carbs will fit my bike?
Previous owner has said that if it is not the cdi it will be the carbs. I understand they have been cleaned many times and made no difference! How much would a used set cost me?
Thanks as always
Mark

1WG carbs will foul on the head. A used set of 3TJ carbs can cost from £30, but have you thought about having the carbs refurbished?
Have you been told the carbs have been cleaned, or have you actually cleaned them yourself? You could also do worse than balance them or check for air leaks on the rubbers.

The guy who sold you the bike hasn't been so acurate with his advise so far.
The bike runs at high engine speed - so the carbs are doing their job but not at lower speed so you have to suspect the low speed jets.
Really though you need to know what works and what doesn't ... could you maybe get it to a dyno for a dyagnostic run ???

Re: Carbs that fit the 3TJ
Ah my friend comes again. I have not looked at them but he has said they are all balanced etc. What I don't understand is that it revs off the throttle nicely when it is stood still and will happily rev between 2 and 3 k which would indicate that circuit was ok ? It is when you get on and pull away the power dies offs but it appears to affect all the cylinders and I would think it unlikely that all 4 were playing up? As I say I will get that cdi on tues and if that fails it is booked into a dealer wed for a couple of diag tests. Trouble is it's £30 each way in the van and £30 worth of diag. Total £90. I really am skint and don't suppose they will do much for that so I am not sure if I should still do that as if it's not the cdi has to be carbs?
Read somewhere on the net that someone had similar probs that stopped when they tool airbox off?
You been really good but how do you get carbs off and what are the settings for;
1. float hight
2. Jet sizes
Also if I put the choke on a tiny bit the engine dies out straight away as I though if the slow running side of things are blocked a extra bit of fuel would help, that has helped on other bikes with similar probs!
As I have said before I have ridden it a short while that scared me shitless but after about a mile I had to stop at a junction it was hard to keep going and even on full throttle it would only run at a rough idle speed until ishut the throttle just a bit and it just died .
Should I keep going with thankfully your help or spend my last penny at the garage?
Thanks you lot are great!

The thing with garages (not all, but some if not most) is that they'll happily take your money for not actually doing anything at all, other than give the bike a good coat of looking at (diagnostics? On a carbed, non-ECU bike? Did you make an appointment or did they just see you coming?MarkT wrote:Should I keep going with thankfully your help or spend my last penny at the garage?

I think you'd be better off spending your money on a new air filter, new plugs, some carb cleaner and a splash of fresh fuel. Don't take anyone's word that anything has been done to anything unless you've actually done the work yourself or stood over someone and watched them do it properly.
There should be a link in this section to the manual for the 3TJ SP which should help you a bit.
I'm sorry if this post is a little harsh, but man, pull yourself together and sort the bike out! Whereabouts do you live?

Thanks I live in wiltshire, as for being harsh no worries as I had a accident on my last bike that was not my fault and I had tpft insurance which wrote my bike off and give me a broken shoulder and wrist and knee and 4 ribs!I I think I have done well getting the cdi off!
You have a point about the garage though!

Re: Carbs that fit the 3TJ
tbh i wouldn't bother with the garage, loads of money for fu*k all usually
check out the manual, there's a pretty ropey one in the general section but the nice MR Evil had a descent copy put in the docs section on the home page here
http://www.400greybike.com/docs.htm
have a bloody good read
then check what you've got compared to standard,
take your time and if in doubt, when you take something apart, get apiece of cardboard and draw the basic shape and poke the bolts through where they should go, then when you put it back together you won't end up with a load of leftover bolts etc
if in doubt ask,
but it's easier for us armchair mechanic if you post some pic's

I'm not going to add any more adivce to that already given to by Boris, Kayla and the rest.
I do have a set of 3tj carbs that were from a running low mileage bike before i went down the hybrid route. Unfortunately they have some damage after a cack handed idiot decided to try and undo a seized screw (that would be me!!!!). I can sort some pictures if you find that its the carbs that are the problem
The damage is repairable but i would say that they would be best for spares just in case
