NC30 89 sprockets and 520 conversion

Post by Johnny Wishbone »

I've been looking into buying the last of the parts needed to finish my NC30 track bike project but I'm having trouble sussing out who makes sprockets and chains for my bike and how to do a 520 conversion.

Now I know what a 520 conversion is and why it's preffered but I'm not sure how to actually go about carrying it out! The NC30 is a 525 chain pitch as standard so all the manufacturers who offer chains and sprockets for the bike, list them in 525. Can anyone advise? Please don't tell me to speak with Rick Oliver. No offence to Rick, it's just I'm looking to buy straight from the manufacturer or their distributor so I can purchase at trade.

Next problem is, I've checked a few sites, looking for prices, and most list the sprocket fitment as 90 - 93 or RL - RM. My bike is an 89 import which I believe is an RK model. Are the chains and sprockets on this model different?

When i did mine i went to my local bike dealer and they actually asked me if i wanted 525 or 520 pitch. I didnt buy mine as a full kit though, just purchased a 520 chain with the right length/links and the required sprockets came from Renthal.

Mate stop confussing yourself with different models of NC. A chain for a NC is just that, they dont differ between models and if you want a 520 pitch one just ask for it. Simples  Just cos they dont list a 520 chain for a NC doesnt mean they havent got one the right length

Thanks DM. I wasn't confusing myself, I justs didn't know if there was a difference between the 89's and the others, in the drive line department. I know there are differences between the models as I've swapped the forks of my 89 models for the later models with better internals and more adjustment.

It's not the chain I was bothered about as such it's more the sprockets. Surely a 520 pitch chain needs sprockets designed to work with a 520 chain. A quick look on the B&C Express website reveals they list a chain, a front sprocket and a rear sprocket for the NC30, all in 520 pitch but only in standard tooth sizes. I was after a few different rears for different circuits.

If you want different 520 sprocket sizes then just get the product code they list for the NC30, alter the section of the code for the number of teeth you are after and search for the new code.

For instance:

Renthal standard front is: 320-20-15

so if you want a 14T front, just search for 320-520-14

You lukemillar, are an absolute star! I'm ebarrassed I didn't think to do that myself to be honest but in my defence, the B&C Express website is hard work. I'd searched for products by bike, the VFR400 NC30, and only 2 sprocket options came up in 520 pitch but when I did what you suggested, I found they offer a full range. Of course I could of just rang or e-mailed them but that would've been too easy.
