Front Fork Setup Ideas and observations

Post by 999Gomerz »

Hi All,

I have done a bit of searching on here and found bits and pieces of info on fork set up in general, but it is in many different posts and to be honest most of it just says get a Rick oliver fork kit, or get a Graham france kit. None of them really mention, spring rate, preload, damping or shim stack arrangements or ride height. I am wanting a guide on where to start and also thought this could be a good reference post for people to come back to without wading through pages and pages of the same thing with very little new information.

What have you tried, was it for track or street, if track is it your wet or dry setting, what was the ride height and how heavy are you?

All of these answers would provide good information for everyone.

Look forward to your replies and hope to get some guideance.

Cheers

I will start off as I had a play yesterday.

NC30 K style forks with CBR600 20mm cartridges installed
Dry Track
I weigh 90kg without leathers
0.90 Kgmm springs
10mm preload
-0.75 turns rebound (not that this really means much without me stating the shim stack but hey)
10mm fork tube showing at top tripple clamp
I have 110mm fork travel available - 95mm used

This worked pretty well, I started off with the fork tubes flush with the top tripple but found turn in was heavy and there was not enough weight on the front tyre getting into the corner and not a great deal of feel when trailbraking to the apex. I dropped the front 10mm and this felt a bit better. Still have a bit of clearance at full bottom so will try lowering the front further after I have sorted out the rear a bit more.
