radiator fan electrical prob
i have been doing some testing on my radiator fan as i thought the fan switch or the actual fan itself was knackered..
i have followed the guides on here and in the haynes and it doesn't seem to give a definitive answer to why mine isnt working..
after checking with my multimeter, it seems there is no power running from the wire that starts in the fusebox and goes to the connector block. there is continuity though. In the fusebox where the 10a fuse sits, there isnt any power in the wire from the ignition into this fuse slot either (blue & yellow wire in the haynes) the pic below shows where the ignition wire runs into the fusebox.

when i run a wire from the battery direct to the connector block and earth the fan switch wire it works.
doing the test in the haynes and on here, if i connect a wire to the earth wire on the fan switch only, it won't.
whether the swich was knackered or not, there would be power coming into the fusebox from the ign and power from the fusebox to the connector block wouldn't there??
my question is. can i hardwire the fan direct from the battery and an earth on the bike? Could I install a switch and inline 10a fuse somewhere along the power wire..
Is this safe and possible?
any help is appreciated and apologies if im not making myself very clear

Re: radiator fan electrical prob
is have you removed the fuse from the fan and tested for continuity? if not youll get falss readings gord',
all you have to do it take the spade off the fan switch and short to earth the fan operates a PERMINATE live to the fan, then the earth runs through the fan switch when its to temp the fan switch closes and takes the ground down to earth once closed,
if theres continuity then there obviously isnt a break in the wire, but it could be posible for an insualtion breakdown and its only picking, youll need to do an ohms reading, it should be in the 0.10 region if its higher reading then your looking at a very weak and broken cable, all i can suggest to save messing arround is take a black and blue wire (from my loom when it arrives) from the fuse box cable chop the old one, crimp or solder, then take it down the length of the loom and then cut the black and blue at the other end and use the new cable.
as i said the fan is a really simple wired device and once you get your head around it its not that fancy. ill do a simple witing diagram so maybe youll get the idea of how easy it actually is to understand, the haynes wiring diagram does help much as its over loaded with info and over welms people.

Hi Ricky
i removed the fuse and tested for continuity between there and the fan connector block, it shows there was continuity there. so i am assuming no break or weak wire. i check for power running onto the fuse box from the ignition to the fan fuse.. there was none?

Re: radiator fan electrical prob
well if thats the case then maybe the cable is crushed, weak etc, therefore enough to get continuity, but youll need to work that out with a LOW OHMS reading rather than continuity.
as i said on the phone just cut the wire at the fuse board and ad a new wire rather than cutting the loom open etc, youll never find it unless its an obvious break, run the cable and tape it on will be alot quicker,
any way heres my simplified drawing for you and others.

Re: radiator fan electrical prob
the wire running INTO the 10a fuse comes from the ignition but it reads as though there is no power from the ignition to fuse either (your perm live with ign on) , which is why im assuming there is no power from the fuse to the fan.

Re: radiator fan electrical prob
if im reading what your writting correctly your saying there is no power at either side of the fuse holder?hardnutdvd wrote:the wire running INTO the 10a fuse comes from the ignition but it reads as though there is no power from the ignition to fuse either (your perm live with ign on) , which is why im assuming there is no power from the fuse to the fan.
if so then it sounds as if there is a faut with the fuse box so to speak?

Re: radiator fan electrical prob
yeah thats what im saying, sorry if i aint explaining it very well.. lol.
the perm live that runs from the ign into the fuse box (fan fuse) is showing as no power..
this perm live runs INTO the fuse box on the right side of where the blade fuse would slot in,
the left side is where the live runs OUT and to the fan....

do you have lights etc?hardnutdvd wrote:yeah thats what im saying, sorry if i aint explaining it very well.. lol.

or is it just the fan thats got no power?

Re: radiator fan electrical prob
ive just rememberd the feed to the fan is from the ignition switch (KEY)!
so it goes from the battery, to main fuse to iginition, to fan fuse, to fan etc my drawing i did earlier still stands as a simple version but id comepletely forgotten the route it takes, and i remember there being a blue wire on the IGN for the fan
so its going to be the cable from the underside of your iginiton key switch, check the connections between the ignition switch to the loom, and spade connection may have come loose.
and do some testing to that plug
if you were closer gord' id have sorted this in minutes
