Cracked Sump thread

Fixing a leak coming from the clutch cover, all went well just used instant gasket to see will it hold.

Last thing i do is refill the bike with oil and tighten the sump nut. Schoolboy error, overtightened it, and *click* theres now a little vertical crack running along the thread of the sump plug hole. Annoyed at myself for doing it, but alas here I am. I was probably hurrying as ive an electrical issue to tackle and wanted to dedicate the weekend to that

I have a tube of Araldyte multi purpose putty in my possesion. I was going to clean the area, try to apply the putty to the thread and then on the outside where the crack is.

Anyone any experience with this? Bitta searching showed it being done with stripped threads but not cracked ones. I would rather do it to the sump while on the bike but if its necesary il remove the sump, which i assume would involve a new gasket and even dropping the headers?

I would worry about replacing the sump at the next oil change, ive already got a new alternator to buy so a cheap fix is preferable.

Any tips or ideas welcome, weve all got a bit of maggyver in us Extra points for unusual fixes!

YOu can replace a sump without removing the exhausts..I'd get a new one. If your fix fails then you are in big shit..

Really? its only a slight leak but Im getting more and more sketchy about the quick fix

Thats good to know about the headers though, il ring my local breakers tomoro to get a price or see if they even have a replacement i dont know what the supply and demand for sumps is lol.

You'd need ot take the sump off and get it uber clean befor trying to chemical metal it or glue it -

Slim chance that NC24/21 sumps fit...same engine code (NC13)

no a 750 one wont fit. speak to geoff or put a post in the for sale / wanted, you will get one no bother and cheap i bet too.

I found my sump in a similar bodged state as what you're planning. Replaced it immediately with a sump supplied by geoff and a gasket from my local.
Do it properly and forget about it I say!

I assume geoffs in the uk? Il check with my breakers might be cheaper than getting it sent over

I am a broke student, yes the €2 bodge is tempting over a ~£25 Sump to be honest but il see how much its going to cost

Yes you'll need to drop the front headers to remove the sump, it won't clear the oil pickup with the headers in place. I found this last time I replaced a stripped sump thread.

Best to get a decent used sump and put it on (with a new gasket), then you can fix the stuffed one at your leisure.
