NC30 Disc Wear?

Post by porndoguk » Sun Mar 13, 2011 12:20 pm

hey guys bit of a wierd post i guess,

but in my trawl for new discs im a little confussed,

my discs are currently at 3.95mm thickness,
and i got a little woried thinking hey these are getting close to the limit of 3.5mm

but after browsing and speaking to curt,

his new prolites measure in at 5mm, alot of ebayers are selling them in at 4.5mm and some as low as 4mm, but some of the pics seem to show them as min thickness 4.5mm or 4mm on the rotor?

now back to my question how long do discs last in general and what sort of mileage would i expect to get out of my last .45mm of disc tollerance.

I think that's hard to gauge. Factors like pad compound and riding style (track or street) would play big parts in that. On top of that, who actually routinely measures their rotors?

i measure them, youll never know if there out of tollerance other wise,

who measures shims?
who measures tyre tread depth?
who measure chain wear?

it all go hand in hadn of owning a bike my friend,

bike used for road riding, not aggressive tho. i do use HH pads which i believe they wear the discs faster.

People measure tread depth? Really? I can just tell when my tires need replacing I don't need to measure the depth.

I agree with what you're saying overall, I've just never heard of anyone that routinely measure their disc thickness. Most people that I've known to measure it usually measure it when it seems to be getting too thin, but never really measure it with any sort of regularity. That's what I trying to get across.

Rick, the 3.5mm is the manufacturers minimum wear limit, this doesn't mean they are useless but I would recommend you replace them at this point. You are worried over nothing, there is probably hundreds of miles left on your discs unless you ride like a dick......Take your hand out of your purse and step away from the geek shit. ;)

Personally, I would check them when you replace pads.

If your replacing them, and you have .45mm left... thats still plenty.
BUT... when you go to replace pads again, if they are on or under, then you replace them.
There is never any point in replacing discs but not pads. Worn pads can never bed-in new discs properly.
