NC30 'fork rings'

(I mean the thin circlips found just under the clip-ons)

In the Honda manual it shows these as visible under the clipons, however they would seem to logically like to be inside the clipons (i.e. you push the forks up as far as they'll go so the circlips hit the clipons inside and will go no further).

Which is the correct position?

They should be on the stanchion, but pointless if you want to drop the forks through the yokes a little.

there a fail safe so that if the 2 m6 allen bolts were to come lose the the clipon cannot go past the circlip, i used aluminium wires and twist them together i went everywhere to try find a circlip on the right thickness to match diameter and found it near impossible. so as i said i settled for alloy wire, 2.5mm dia, can send you some if you want buddy.

Should the rings be...

1. INSIDE the clipons (i.e. the forks physically stop at them and you can't see them)

or

2. VISIBLY BELOW the clipons (i.e. you can see them)

I always thought they went inside but then ive never had a NC with them fitted

id say option 2.

you need those clipons as high up as posible for clearance on the clocks (Roadbikes)

and so that the little spike sits in on the yoke fully,

but i dont think ive seen many bikes with them fitted hence why i went to the extreme of using alloy wiring in the groove and twisted with pliers TIGHT.

So that's one vote for each so far!

Clip-ons definitely up against the top yoke, no brainer for me.

However what I'm trying to get at is the standard front ride height - i.e. how much fork top protrudes through the yoke. With the ring just below the clip-on you get just the fork cap. With it inside the clip on you get a few mm of stanchion too. So which is stock?

You mean the fork circlips?

They go on the fork-stantions, there should be a grove for them to go into, it stops the forks dropping out of the yokes.

When the circlip is against the yoke this is the factory height.

At least on the NC24 anyway.. should imagine it'd be the same on the 30. Not at home to check
