rvf 400 performance mods
Hi there,
Im looking to beef up my rvf 400, when i bought it the guy told me it was "dynojetted to stage one" and had a dyno reading showing an increase in bhp from standard. Is this another way of saying it has a jetting kit? I want to increase the bhp and the throttle response, i've literally spent hours looking on the internet for performance parts but it seems impossible to find especially HRC parts. Any suggestions of what i can do?

Is it a road or a racebike?
Either way there are numerous mods that can make it perform better.
If it were mine I would be fitting a full exhaust system, hrc carb springs, shorter carb velocity stacks, jet it to suit, perhaps an Ignitech cdi and work from there.
Most of the hrc parts are discontinued, although some reproduction parts are available (and are just as good and much cheaper than genuine hrc). Check out Rick Oliver's stock list for some of these goodies:

thanks so much for the link, theres already stuff on there im very interested in! with the carb kits, can i literally purchase them and pitch up at my garage and ask them to fit it? the guys that work on my bike are part of a race time so are good with this sort of thing?!
Its a road bike at the moment, i just want the power because i ride with gsxr 600s so keeping up is hard but i dont want a 600 cos im small! lol
do you know of anyone down south that specialises in motorcycle tuning?

How far south? There are a couple of decent shops around that deal with V4's, depends where you are and what work you want done. Workshops that deal with the formula 400 racebikes are the pick of them:kirstie wrote: do you know of anyone down south that specialises in motorcycle tuning?

There are plenty of workshops that I wouldn't trust with them either. It will be easier, quicker and cheaper to have someone fit the parts that knows these bikes well.

Do not be tempted to buy the complete hrc kit for the 35 unless you intend changing the complete Induction to hrc spec which to be honest is not going to be the best setup for the road and even with all the hrc kit you can find to throw at it your still going to struggle against a 600 on the road.
I'd start with a full system and the mods cammo mentioned, hrc springs, 1mm washers and jet to suit maybe 110 or 112 size jets all round. I'd then start thinking about which direction your going with tuning, what ever you do don't start removing parts of the standard induction system thinking that the more you can get in there the better it will run because it won't, it'll run like a sack o shite.
IMO the Most cost effective mod you can do power wise is a set of +2mm pistons, about £900 but g-force have seen 80bhp from a set of these pistons on a pretty much stock motor.
Plenty of info on the site for this and various rvf tuning options,

which cdi unit would you recommend between the hrc and the ignitech?
and yes im in england so australia might be a bit of a costly trip but thats for the websites had a look through them there really interesting.

Ignitech, the HRC one is not programable. Site member rick oliver sells them which will also come with great advice as to setting them up.

Get a 600 and lower it?
Your never going to keep up with 600's on the straights anyway, All of the HRC stuff and your only going to be making mid 70bhps.. Most 600s have at least 100hp, the newer ones weigh peanuts.
My old mans 08 600rr weights about 50kg less than my 400 but has double the bhp!
However, a decent suspension setup and some good rubber will see you annihilating all but the very best with ease on any kind of twisty road :-)

Watched a good video recently of a ballsy / nutcase 250rr rider harrasing a fireblade owner one some really twisty road.
