A123 Lightweight Battery Packs

I've been looking into lightweight battery packs to replace my knackered standard battery in my racebike that died the other day. Check out the attached link, a young guy in the states makes battery packs using A123 lithium ion batteries. A 4-cell pack would only weigh 0.36kg (0.8lbs)! Not bad considering a normal motorcyle battery weighs roughly 2 - 2.5kgs and located up high under the seat.

Has anyone had any experience with these types of battery packs before?

their was something in pb recently about them and seen quite a few racer/track day bikes with them, great cos their easy to relocate especially on tiny bikes like 400's

Check out a thread on the pb forum called "my sexy r1 front end" or something similar to that. Pretty sure the guy built his own but still not cheap.

I use a ytx5 size in my race nc30, small unit (probably 1.25kg at most), cheap and good battery life. Not quite the above, but much cheaper!

Wiith one simple cut you've got 2 BATTERIES!!! a 4 and a 6 cell pack already professionally connected!! All ya gotta do is solder a neg and pos wire on and shrink wrap/tape it up baby!! dont get much easier!!

............ until ya bike explodes!!

I thought I might as well bite the bullet and purchase one of the 4-cell battery packs. I was considering making my own battery, but I can honestly say when it comes to anything electrical I'm on the ever so slightly retarded side of things. I can handle most things mechanical, but electronics have always been a struggle. Once it arrives I'll let you guys know what it's like.

Hi, if its a race bike and you bump start it (ie you havent got a starter motor on the bike) but still have a generator, just use 10 aaa Nimh cells, you dont need any capacity, just needed to start the engine.
save you some money and prob weight aswell.

10 AAA batteries...now that would be lightweight

The rules in our race category state (from memory, which is usually fairly unreliable!) that we must have the starter motor installed, but I like your way of thinking.
