nc30 - no temperature reading ?
right very nearly ready for my mot, doing some final checks and dont seem to be getting a reading from the gauge?
it worked before i stripped the clocks and put them in their new housing, now i know when i put two of the wires in the back of the gauge they were the wrong way as the temperature shot right up into the red as soon as i turned the ignition on.
i sorted the wires into the right place and this no longer happens. question is could i have fried the gauge by having these in the wrong way round? so causing it not to display any temperature? i havent run her long enough as of yet to see if the fan kicks in, i am assuming if the fan kicks in then the thermostat is still all good and working.
i really should take the thermostat out to check it, but could it be anything else obvious? could the sensor that plugs in the side of the rad be causing issues? or is that nothing really to do with the problem i have? i have no haynes manual with me at work and i just want to try to get some ideas before i get home.
cheers fellas

Interesting one there.
Never connected it backwards but it's quite possible to kill it I should imagine.
Usually if you disonnect the instrument earth (it's by the front coils on the 24) so i guess it's around there somewwhere the gauge will shoot up into the red.
You could try that?

i'll try disconencting the earth and see what happens - if this then shoots up into the red should i take this as the gauge still works?

Re: nc30 - no temperature reading ?
following on from this thread a while ago i have now got round to un-screwing the earth cable to the temp gauge, once i did this and turn the ignition on - nothing. the needle never moved or anything.
i then removed each cable one at a time leaving the remaining two still connected. i had the needle jump right up to the red part of the display.
with the other cable removed the needle went half way up the gauge and stopped there.
so i am now guessing i need to find a new gauge?

Re: nc30 - no temperature reading ?
right im now a bit stumped.
i have changed the temp gauge with a known working one and i am still getting the same problems as before. wired up correctly no temp ready even after a good 10 mins of tickover.
so i am now guessing maybe the thermostat? though how about the small item that goes into the side of the lower rad on the left side as you sit on her? ( the name of this part has completey left me at this second! )
any suggestions what to look for would be helpful. i have four days off over the weekend to get her compeltely ready for the mot, so would like to try and solve this issue at the same time.

Re: nc30 - no temperature reading ?
A trick I used to test to see if my thermostat was working in my car is to remove it, tie some string or fishing line to it and then dangle it in some hot water. If it opens up then it is working, if no changes happen then its broken. I assume it will be the same for the bike. The water needs to be quite hot for this as i think the fan kicks in at 80c if I remember.
Failing that try the little temperature switch you mentioned on the radiator, make sure you havnt got any corroded points, WD40 works a treat on them.
Hope that is of some help.

Thermostat is nowt to do with the temp gauge.
The gauge takes its temp from the lower rad. So, check that first.

It's a thermoswitch type device you mean and as Mark's said it is on the lower rad.. the Haynes manual should give you specs for it.
As it heats up its reistance changes.
Do you have a multimter handy?
Set it to 200 ohms, connect the probs to each of the pins on the temperature sender and start the bike up, as the temerature warms up the resistance should drop (or get higher.. i believe it is drop)
You can compare these readings to the haynes book.. it'll give you resistance values at certain temps.
It'll probably be that you'll find it works, you just have a duff wire between the sender and the gauge :)

Re: nc30 - no temperature reading ?
thermostat only opens coolant passage to let coolant flow round the rads the temp sender switch is fucked or bad connection or bad wiring also i think the switch on the lower rad doubles as the fan switch ???????????hope this helps
