New project new headaches!
Hey,
Recently aquired a half decent 73a for reasonable money with a view to use the engine in my original bike(dead)but i`ve decided to use this one as a test bed for my original 73.
I`ve recently killed the motor in my R1 too so not a lot of luck at the minute, due to this i`ve put the R1 on the back burner and pinched the R7 front out of it and fitted it to the 73.....My problem at the moment is the steering lock stops dont line up like they did on the 76 conversion so before i start cutting/welding the original front fairing brace to make lock stops do any of you fella`s know if there is an aftermarket brace available(searched harris,no joy)to fit my bike? I`m thinking maybe Chris will know.........

Further mods include AP variable master cylinder, six pot AP`s,320mm fully floating cast iron disc`s so i think it will stop ok!!
Thank`s fella`s
Andy

Re: New project new headaches!
i usually machine adjustable lock stops to fit to the bottom yoke. Only thing you need to do on the yoke itself then is 2 tapped holes. The rest is done with the new part.

Rear shock completed today,i dont remember it sitting this high on the other bike but we`ll see when i ride it.
Few more bits to do clock mounts, horn, lock stops and then to the crankcase repair(that`ll be fun!!!

Re: New project new headaches!
Progress report so far.....
Lock-stop now sorted, fabricated a small bracket from the headlight brace......

Headlights and rev counter etc bracket fabricated and fitted.......(no speedo yet!)

Top fairing and associated bodywork refitted......

On to the next area for attention-Chain/Sprocket`s.Nothing really major but my predicament is that i have a new 525 pitch chain but it is 2x links too short.Has anybody used a smaller front sprocket in the past? My concern is that it will wear faster due to the tighter turning circle of the smaller sprocket.....anybody got any experience of this? I would compensate with a 2 tooth reduction on the rear also to keep the gearing as close to standard as possible and give me the length required on the chain.
Thank`s fella`s....

Re: New project new headaches!
Update; Bike, i`m now happy with the way it handles/stop`s etc(just a small amount of fettling now required). Still undecided what to do with the exhaust yet,single/twin decisions,decisions....currently running a single outlet with Viper can but the link pipe is shit if i`m honest. Anyway this motor is no exception to the rest and run`s badly and hesitates it`s the usual suspect`s `o` ring`s,needles and the emulsion tubes are oval(NICE!)
Took the plunge and aquired the 3.0 factory kit from factory pro and i`m lucky enough to have a friend who know`s the man himself and i`ve managed to get some new emulsions that are nickel plated too so that should sort that little problem out for as long as i have the bike....i hope! K&N filters to get yet and yes i know it`s not the best way to run the motor with small filters etc BUT i`m sick to death of stripping that f*cking airbox on and of and i like a challenge!
It`s now running R1 coils as one of the originals handed it`s card`s in....clearances still to do(easy)and then on to the carb`s.....

Will post with more updates as and when....oh,yeah has anybody on here ever ran with this kit?

Re: New project new headaches!
Update;
Checked valve clearances and adjusted(very minor adjustment required),stripped and fitted factory kit and new emulsions which were a bastard to say the least! I had to file(carefully!) the small aperture at the base of the emulsion to allow them to locate over the small dowel on the carb body but all fine now. Marc said they were an alternative as opposed to standard tubes. Filled with fuel and hit the starter and she started first go,idled smoothly and responded to any throttle input instantly(no filters yet). Tomorrow i will check and put the thing back together and fire it up the road just to see how it go`s....
All in all i`m very happy with the results so far but i`ve still got a long way to go yet,brackets/overflow bottle`s etc etc.

Re: New project new headaches!
Well.....
Just got back from a short road test and what a difference i cant believe it`s the same bike. Pull`s like a train in any gear/rpm with no flat spots but it is still a little fluffy up top in third gear onward`s (clip height maybe?) and hunt`s a little on tick over (mixture?).
Down to my mate`s workshop on Monday me think`s to iron out these last few problem`s and to fit the filters, they are only sponge filters but they were very cheap and will afford enough protection for me to decide to stick to the small filter route or rejet and go for a modified standard airbox.
Cant be too far off right coz it lifted in second even with a fat c@nt like me on board!!!
Happy,happy,happy

Re: New project new headaches!
Update;
Jet kit associated problem`s sorted and `dodgy` airfilters fitted. Pull`s nicely now and behaves how it should at last...
Oil seal`s next (output shaft/clutch pushrod/GPS) and then on to that nasty link pipe.....

Re: New project new headaches!
Great work on the bike Andy, was the Factorypro kit for the 73A or a Bandit?
I bet with the new front the brakes are eye popping.
I have a 73a SP and the ally spacers that fit between the rubber carb manifold/mount and the head were removed by Suzi, not sure if it affects power but seeing as its free you could take them out and see if it alters power delivery and getting rid of the twin system will save a load of weight, it weighs a ton!
