charging problem
hey guys was at the track yesturday.
had the bike a trickle charge the past few days to be certain the battery should be fine, started fine for the first 2 sessions then nothing, you hit the starter and nothing no sound at all
.
clutch starts no problems so i continued and finished my track day.
after one session i ripped off the seat unit and the battery was only getting around 9 volts and when u rev it its a little higher but not like the 14v it should.....
i brought it home and chucked it on trickle again to make shore starters not goosed and it starts fine with a charged battery so does this sound like a alternator or regulator problem?
im hoping regulator problem as i brought the nc30 (1992 model race bike) about a month ago and i tested the battery while started at 5000rpm and it measuered a nice 14.3v :) :) so i would like to think the alternator wouldnt diminish so quickly.
my haynes describes ways to test these with a set of multimeters, is this a good way of checking whats fukd?
whats your thoughts fellas
cheers Tim

Re: charging problem
Thats deffo the easiest way to test whats not working. i've heard that the altenator can be a bit of a bitch to accuratly test as sometimes it measures of but its still messed up. I'd start by following the procedures in the workshop manual (checking resistance across pins etc)
Make sure you test both the regulator/rectifier AND the altenator that supplies it (3 yellow wires)
If the reg is knackered (which wouldn't surprise me at all) you have a few choices.. a new geunine honda one for your bike, a cheap chinese copy for your bike, a electrex world one for your bike, and one designed for another bike (i.e R1)
A bit of googling and you'll find lots of info, I've ordered a new electrex world one for my NC24 as it has big fins on it to help it cool better, many people seem to think the R1/R6 regs are more reliable and from what i've read there not hard to fit either.
Hope thats of some help.

Re: charging problem
yer i done some testing and to me the wiring and alternator seems to be ok the resistance between the wires is all between the values in haynes :)
to me it seems its like the reg/rec i also tested this and got nothing like the readings in the haynes and when the bikes running theres no charge, battery was at 12.7 and went to 12.5 and stayed there regardless of revs
i hope its reg/rec lolz as i tested the charging system 1 month ago and all was sweet
now whats the best reg/rec do genuine honda ones last longer then the aftermarket copies? as ebay have them for about $20 plus postage,,, and are the ones with the cooling fins better?
cheers Tim
