3en1 Wont start

Post by DAVE E C »

Hi, this is for my son whohas just bought a FZR 400 F reg. When he bought it he said it ran a little rough but he could sort this out, but stopping on the way home only about 6 miles he is unable to start the bike again.
The fule pump is working OK. The starter turns the engine over but it wont fire up.
Help required please as he is not as good with bikes as he thinks he is.
Where should we start to look and in what order should we work?.
The bike has a custom s/s exhaust system so no exo valve.
Could it be something stupid like ( well anything simple ).
Cheers
Dave.

If its turning over but not starting I'd probably say spark plugs...

Have you given it a service yet or has it had one recently?

I would check the spark plugs. You may find as i did when I brought mine, they are covered in oil etc. and buy some new ones it should be fine.

Also, charge up your battery, if your getting a weak spark it could be why its being a bit of a bugger.

Hope it helps a bit.

First thing, you have petrol in it. If the fuel tap has been broken (it's on the left below the tank) it may be set to main tank when it's going to reserve ... that means there's fuel in it but it's not getting to the carbs.

Spark plugs to start with and check they're all sparking.

Take the carbs off and give them a clean, it's good even if they don't need it.

Put some jump leads on the battery, Halfords do a set with smaller crocodile clips for bikes which make it easier than the car size ones. Don't run the engine if you use a car.

See what happens and get back to us.

Thanks guys for your quick reply.
Plugs have been checked and are OK,
Good spark form each plug.
My concerns are now that my son removed the plugs when there was grit and rubbish around the plugs and some of this may have gotten to the bores, dont know if its best to remove the engine and strip it down on a bench and give it a good clean.
Are all parts for this bike still available from dealers etc.
Also require a good repair manual as this will be a first off for us.
Cheers.

Kind of early days to be stripping the engine, it was running when picked the bike up. If you think you may have dropped some grit down the bores then get some hose down there and put the other end on a vacumn cleaner.
Have a look at the carbs first, then with the the air box off and try starting it on some carb cleaner.

There are manuals in the top thread of this forum, before you start rebuilding do a dry and wet compression test it could be the valve clearances.
