Hi,

We have this NC30 which recently stalled just as we were pulling onto the drive - didn't think too much as initially we thought we just let the clutch out too fast.

Upon checking the bike, it turns out that there was no power - as in no dash lights/no electrics at all.

Asked on another forum and they mentioned it could be the fuses so I checked the ones under the rear seat, found one had blown so change it - still nothing. Changed the 'ignition' fuse too although it looked fine and bingo, the dash lights were on...

Only thing is that the lights were very dim and often went off after a few secs...

I then got a charger and hooked it up to the bike...the battery was reading 12.?v (so I am guessing it isn't that).

Decided to try the ignition again...sometimes the dash lights would dim out (when I turn the ignition on the battery volt goes to near 0) but on other occasions it would be bright and stay that way (the battery volt doesn't fall as low in this scenario)

When the lights are bright, I tried starting the bike...it certainly doesn't fire up...instead I hear this weird shrieking noise from this thing (I don't know what this is so someone can enlighten me ) which is located in the tail unit near the battery.

Anyone had any ideas what else could be wrong? I checked the fuse in the above pic and that was fine too.

I'm a bit new to this 'fix the bike myself' type of thing so any help will be much appreciated.

The voltage readings when I try to start the bike normally dips to near 0.

I'll have to try it again at the weekend and will post with more accurate figures.

Hi,

i think your battery might be shot, it should read at least 10.5v when you have a load on it. try looking at this site it is quite good.

If you have a spare battery might be best to try it, also might be worth checking if the regulator is working properly.

The thing making the noise is your starter relay. The only time i have had 'strange noises' coming from mine was because it was just clicking and that was due to a duff battery.

Do you have a manual to show you how to test the regulator/rectifier?
Because if the regulator/rectifier is knackered then you dont want to damage your other battery buy running it for to long.

Thanks - the plan is just to hook it up and see if it works - don't intend on leaving it in their...

Now...how do I go about testing the reg/rectifier? Bit of a noob at all this...thanks

set multi meter to 0-20v dc connect+ probe to red/white and - probe to green turn on ignition on, and you should get full battery voltage.
next
switch off ignition, set meter to ohms check for continuity between green and earth.
next
check resistance between any 2 yellow terminals should get between 0.1 and 1 ohms
if you don't get the results above you will need to check wiring between battery and rectifier.
if the wiring is ok, probably a faulty rectifier.

If you plan to do any work on the bike yourself, it would be well worth getting a haynes manual there is more info in there about the resistance reading you should get testing all the connections on the rectifier.
