Checking engine number

Post by Tim400GB »

I'm looking into buying a new engine from a breaker for my project bike and before i spend lots of money what are the exact details and information that can be extracted from the engine number?
Is there a direct way of seeing if it is stolen?
Can you get the exact model/year bike it has come from?

I need it for my NC30 project, are there any tell tales? I dont want to buy a nc29 by accident or something.

just buy one from someone on here.... prob cheaper, prob was running just last week.

If you are concerned that you might buy an NC29 in error for an NC30 motor then I am worried about your project already!

They are chalk and cheese. ;)

Ref numbers - IIRC they are all NC13 stamped but so are the NC24 and 21 motors....so if you want an NC30 engine you'll need to get the number and check it agains the list in the Haynes book of lies.

There are some other obv differneces that you can look at to distinguish between a 21/24 and a 30/35 engine.. which are pretty obv...

The NC30 will have the speedo drive attatched to the sprocket cover, the NC24 doesn't.

The NC24 has an oil cooler.. only the UK NC30 engine will have this attached.

The NC30 has TINY sparkplugs.. the NC24 has bigger ones. Are NC30 cases all black?

Yep, NC30 cases are all metallic black.

NC35 are silver.
