If the starter's gearing is getting jammed, itl cause it to stall, draw huge current and dim your lights.. One way to see whats going on is to open the right side of the crankcase, theres prob 10 -15 bolts around the cover. The starter shaft comes through on the right hand side on an nc30, maybe same on 24. Theres a gear between the starter motor and starter clutch(timing marks stamped on it), remove this gear and remove the starter motor and check for obvious damage. Theres only a few bolts to check all this so its not difficult

Is the motor spinning but not turning the engine?

You'll need to check under the casing and see if the splines are knackered or the gears that connect are working - that would be my best guess.

If it is trying to turn the engine and stopping them you have other issues...but probably related to the idelr gear that takes the load from the mtoor to the engine.

Remove the starter from the crackcase, just 2 bolts to undo on the starter motor then slide away from case sideways. Keep it wired and see what happens when cranked. if it does nothing then its most likely burnt out, you'l need to look inside crank case to find out why

make sure the starter motors earthed too when you try and crank it over.
