tyre pressures - track

Post by nick »

Ok, think i have a rough idea on pressures for the track, but i thought i'd canvas opinion with you guys. For dry days i run supercorsa's, if its damp or cold i've got 364's and then for the really soggy days, full wets.

What pressures (cold) would you recommend for these?

I've been running 26psi on bridgestone YEK wets through the winter

I only did one track track day on dry tyres, Avon viper supersport. I think I was running 28 front and 26 rear. I run 28F 30R on the road anyway, so could probably lower these a bit more.

This is on a 3TJ/600 hybrid by the way.

My bike was set up with super corsa pros for a track day and I was told 30 psi front and rear.

Over the winter I didn't use the bike much so when I took it out the steering felt awful. The presures had dropped so I put them back up to 30/30 and it felt great again.

Chris - good to put a face to a name ;)

I was always led to believe that track pressures were lower than road. Can anyone enlighten me?

Really it should depend on the track temperature. The tyres need to run at optimum temp and varying the pressure alters the friction of the tyre, lower = more friction.

OK, so given that temperature increase is higher on track than road, I would have throught that the starting pressure would be lower. But I know that tyre manufacturers state hot pressures for track tyres, so I guess you work backwards from that.

But I've also heard TDOs talking about lowering pressures for track and not forgetting to pump them up if you're riding home.

All weird to me. I've been using my road pressures minus a few psi on track and all seems just fine.
