rvf 400
Hi everyone. Im seeking for some advice on this topic.
Alright, this morning, went out and removed the sparkplugs from the engine.
It did appear some sort of liquid on the tip of the 2 front plugs
When the bike was running, it spits a lot of liquid( oil + fuel .i think. and it looks like white+abit of black...)
I'll have to hire a ute sometime next week,to get this to the mechanic nearby. But for now, try to find out what cause this problem
Any1 having this problem before?

Re: rvf 400 propblem..
Hi, welcome to the site..
I cannot see your vid as I am at work...
Does the bike not run? does it run badly?
if you take the plugs out and they have oily threads this is normal.
Some more information as to the problems would be useful...am sure you'll find the help you need on this site!

Re: rvf 400 propblem..
From your description it's probably just water. Water is a combustion product. When the exhaust is cold, the water vapor condenses on the metal exhaust pipe walls and gets sprayed out as liquid. Everything in there is coated with carbon so it looks black like oil. Once things warm up, no more spray.
If you take a drop and run it between your fingers I think you'll find it's not slick like oil. If you were really getting that much oil out the exhaust you'd probably be seeing big blue clouds when the engine was hot.

Get some tissue near the exhaust to see whether its just water! ID be alot more concerned about the rattle from your engine- hopefully you just need the valves adjusted there!

I reckon the spray is alright..normal. get it hot to remove the condensation and it will be fine.
The rattling is not cool though.

Re: rvf 400 propblem..
Hi, I just watched the vid and the engine rev noise doesn't sound very well...it looks like it doesn't rev up proper as you turn the throttle (it may be running only 3 cylinders instead of all 4 cylinders). So the liquid you are telling may be a mixture of condens water from cold engine start (cold air in the exhaust) and also unburned fuel.
Take one by one the spark plug(s) out of cylinder head) if check each seperately if it sparks good. If not, replace these. Also, check the ignition caps/coils if these are fit in good order (no.1-2-3-4) and are good connected. Did you already checked and cleaned the carbs...?
And the blue smoke may point to some heavy fueling that is unburned or in worse case..an internal engine oil leakage due to failure gasket or other.
Keep posted about the progress.
Hope this helps.

Re: rvf 400 propblem..
Alright. today i've been to 4 different bike mechanic shops, none of them willing to fix my bike as its grey imported (very hard to get parts for this). And they said that if they're going to fix this, it would cost more than the bike
So i guess i'll try to fix this problem myself and abit of help from a friend.
Does any know where can i download a copy of an RVF manual ?
Oh In aus, its very hard to find parts for this bike.
I recently went on ebay.co.uk, i've found an Rvf in good running condition would cost around 250 GBP, but the problem is that they won't sent it to aus
But for now, i want to get an Rvf manual.
Many thanks , Hieu.

Re: rvf 400 propblem..
We send several Honda 400 parts boxes a week to Australia - just ask.
We use Fedex - with full tracking.
If it helps we have a good used RVF engine in bits less the gearbox - so sure we can help.

Re: rvf 400 propblem..
Id start of with a compression test which will show any proplems with the rings, if rings shot that could be the cause of blue smoke
Then a leakdown test on the cooling system which could then indicate + show if there are any cracked liners, head gasket failures etc which could the cause for excessive moisture
If both of these are ok check crankcase breathers are not blocked as that could over pressurise bottom end + could also cause it to smoke
