NC24 soot all over back wheel - full exhaust system replace?

Post by Vanessa13688 »

I have had my NC24 for nearly 2 years - she's restricted until June and so I think she is running very rich which would explain the sheer volume of soot in my end can! What worries me is that the soot is now all over my back wheel after only riding a few miles, suggests a hole or leak somewhere? If it needs a full exhaust system replacement does anyone know where to get parts or a good fab shop in lincolnshire?! Not even David Silver Spares can help with this one, including gaskets :(

Thanks

If there was a hole or leak you would probably be able to hear it.I would hope you do not need a complete exhaust system because a] they are expensive and sometimes difficult to get hold of and b] they are expensive in labour to fit as the engine needs to come out.

Hmm I've had a grovel under it tonight while fitting a new battery and the front down pipes look OK, the rear seem OK but the collection box is knackered...providing I can get the collection box and gaskets I may get away with just those being done which (fingers crossed!) isn't an engine-out job. Had a look at the can - I'm presuming its a slip-on as I can't see any bolts, but I'm reluctant to start wiggling things or undoing things incase the dreaded happens. Tried to get the pillion footrest and hanger off but the bolts are in there tight - girl armpower just may not be enough right now!! Think the can is packed full too - the outer 'case' or 'wrap' is bulging inbetween the joins in the rear by the frame, and the vents are pretty blackened. May have found the problem - now to sort it!!

I hope its not a full job too, I know that getting a full system is nigh-on impossible...

Bad news is that a lot of people sell / brake an NC24 as a rotten collectorbox can write the bike off .

A standard collectorbox is as rare as rocking horse poo. I've seen crap knackered ones fetch nearly £200 on ebay.

Theres a guy on here who makes a Stainless Steel one! It's £350 ish?

I'm afraid you do have to take the engine out to remove the collectorbox.. the rear downpipes are attatched to the box and you can't get them in / out or off without removing the engine.

Does it have the standard exhaust? I can't see how you would get exhaust soot on the back wheel, are you sure it's not just brake dust? / Road Grime / Salt (spesh as its winter)

Some pictures would help.

Vents? Confused now :)

I know thats what I thought! I'll take some photos 2m when it's (hopefully!) stopped snowing so you can see. I did think it could be brakedust so cleaned the wheel off and took her for a gentle spin using only front brake, with the same results in only a few miles. Weird.
I can get an aftermarket collectorbox from David Silver for £129 and gaskets, so providing everything else is sound it may only be a few hundred pounds :( I do need to get this can off though to have a look...Dad would be ashamed, he's an engineer and Im his 'boy' so should be fully capable! Lol.

Oh and yeah its standard exhaust that came with it (I think) looks like the front downpipes have been replaced, pretty sure the end can is still the original. Too cold to be out there any more...tried to start her, wouldnt have it and I've thought the battery has been on its way out for a while but kept the new one on the shelf til I was sure...decided to bring it out!

Might just do all the paintwork while the fairings are stripped off...something tells me that my uni essay won't get done for a while :)

David Silvers have the NC24 collectorbox instock? I can't find it on their website.

I know they have a couple of NC21 collector box's in but these are different.

The Standard endcan is on a link-pipe that joins to the collectorbox by a clamp.

Undo this clamp and the 12mm bolt that holds it to the rear footrest hanger and the end-can and link pipe come off as one unit and look somethign like this..

Changing the collector isn't too bad of a job (you'll need more than one person ideally... though)

If you pay somone to do it it'll probably cost a bit.. especially if they've not done it before.

If you do it yourself be very careful with all of the engine bolts.. you can snap them very easily.. then it's a pain :)

Oh the front downpipes don't tend to rust! It's only where the pipes join together.
Where abouts are you? If you need any help with your NC24 I don't mind

You can change the collector without dropping the engine? I read somewhere it had to be dropped anyway to get at the rear collector joints...I found a guys site who takes it through step by step, not that I fancy doing it! Dads an engineer but works away and 'is too old to be grovelling under bikes now' so that leaves me.

I'm in Lincolnshire...probably a million miles away! I know of one or two more NC24s in Lincs - I saw some at a local bike meet and the guy said he's been doing one up as a project.

I can get an aftermarket collector from DSS for £130, there's a guy emailed me saying he can make one which doesnt need engine removal as its got slip-on joints for £250 or there's a set of f+r downpipes and collector on ebay at the minute http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT however the collector looks a bit mank but its only £65!

I know labour will be a bomb...a guy I know runs a bike shop/garage and he said hes not done one so wont quote on labour til i get the bits...bit reluctant to do that.

I have no idea what to do!

Took some photos today while still neglecting uni work - took some ColdStart to get her running and when I blipped the throttle all the condensation came out with a load of soot from the underneath so im pretty sure thats the source of the soot.

It may just be that my end can is clogged, but looks like the collector WILL need doing some time soon so Im in two minds whether to do it now while its winter and I can actually get one!

Fancy working on a VFR project?! Lol :)

Tried to put photos up but could only do links, sorry...

The source of the crud

Bottom of collector...even if its not the problem me thinks it will need doing soon...

Condensation + throttle blipping + soot = murky soup! Forgot to move my manual etc so everything got covered!

List of other jobs to do:
Throttle cable lube and adjust
Choke cable lube and adjust or replace...seems to have no choke any more :(
Fairing plastics to repair and repaint (Plastex is on its way :) )
Good old clean and polish up!

Update:
Tried to look at the choke cable at both ends and encountered a slight problem in taking my airbox off...in addition to the seized swingarm bolts which resulted in snapped bolts, drilled out and then holes put in the swingarm ending in a swingarm replacement including my friend dropping the bike; a knackered exhaust; broken fairings etc; I discovered that whoever put the airbox in last crossthreaded one of the bolts so dad and I had to drill it out; plus the battery was nearly dry! This is the result...

not a lot left now!

We are assuming this is ok and doenst need replacing..

Question...is the NC21 end can different to the NC24? I found a cheap special offer end can for only £60 but its black and for an NC21...

The nc21 system will fit an nc24.The difference is that the silencer comes out at a lower level so you would want the nc21 rear footrest bracket as well.

Thanks Duncan - dammit tho, I like the high-mount NC24 can :( Oh well, if I can get an NC21 for £60 whereas the NC scorpion costs £180 and the genuine thing costs £404 if the place actually has one, I think I'll go for the NC21!!
